Tucson Weather Update: Prepare for Storms and Soaring Temperatures

PHOENIX, AZ – Residents of Tucson and the surrounding areas should brace for a dynamic weather pattern. A First Alert Weather Day has been declared for Monday as scattered showers and thunderstorms move into the region, with the potential for severe conditions. Recent activity saw rainfall begin around 5:30 p.m. in parts of Phoenix and communities east of the Valley, with more rain impacting the East Valley around 6 p.m.

Current Storm Activity & Risks

Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport recorded wind speeds exceeding 40 mph as the storms approached from the south, moving at approximately 30 mph. This rapid movement meant most locations experienced rainfall for a relatively short duration – around 10 minutes. However, don’t let the brevity fool you; these storms pose a threat.

  • Severe Potential: One or two storms could become severe, bringing the risk of hail and strong wind gusts.
  • Rainfall Variability: Rainfall totals will vary significantly across the Valley, ranging from around 0.05 inches in some areas to nearly 0.25 inches in others.

Looking Ahead: A Dramatic Temperature Shift

Following a brief respite with temperatures dipping into the 70s on Tuesday, a significant warmup is anticipated later this week and into the weekend. Highs are forecast to climb into the mid-90s, potentially breaking existing records. While most of Monday afternoon should remain relatively dry with highs in the low 80s, a stray shower or thunderstorm is possible after 4 or 5 PM. The most widespread storm activity is expected to arrive after 9 or 10 PM and continue intermittently overnight into Tuesday morning.

A few lingering showers may persist Tuesday morning, primarily across the higher terrain east of the Valley. However, Tuesday afternoon promises increasing sunshine and highs in the mid to upper 70s.

Heatwave Intensifies

The rebound in temperatures will be swift. Wednesday will see highs in the low to mid-80s, followed by a substantial warmup towards the end of the week and into the weekend. Expect highs in the low to mid-90s on Thursday, continuing through Friday and the weekend.

Record-Breaking Heat Possible

Several daily high-temperature records are at risk of being broken. Long-range models even suggest the possibility of temperatures exceeding 100 degrees by the middle of next week. While confidence in these projections remains low, reaching 100+ degrees would mark the earliest occurrence on record, surpassing the current record of March 26, set in 1988.
