Atlanta Weather: Snow Flurries Possible, Cold Temperatures Ahead

Atlanta Weather Update: Tracking Potential Snow and a Deep Freeze

The FOX 5 Storm Team is closely monitoring a winter weather system moving through Georgia, bringing the possibility of light snow, particularly in the southern parts of the Atlanta metropolitan area. While much of North Georgia is expected to remain largely unaffected, residents further south should prepare for potential winter conditions.

What’s the Forecast?

According to FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Greg Majewski, “It’s not an overly strong system,” but it warrants attention. The system is expected to move through quickly, clearing out by tomorrow afternoon. Current winter weather advisories are focused south of the city, with areas further north experiencing minimal impact.

Winter Weather Alerts in Effect

  • Winter Weather Advisory: Parts of central Georgia may see a dusting to one inch of snow.
  • Winter Storm Warning: Areas near Macon and Warner Robins are under a Winter Storm Warning, with potential for 1 to 3 inches of snow.

The models indicate the heaviest snowfall will concentrate in southern Georgia. A key factor will be the actual air temperature as we move into tomorrow morning.

Temperature Drop & What to Expect

While the initial system will pass, colder air will surge in overnight, causing temperatures to plummet into the 20s and 30s by morning. “The temperatures are going to get really cold come tomorrow morning,” Majewski warned, “and it’s going to be a struggle all day to warm up.” Conditions are expected to improve by tomorrow afternoon.

Beyond the Snow: Fire Danger & Dry Conditions

Once the weekend system clears, the focus shifts to “dangerously dry” cold. Monday through Wednesday will remain dry, but relative humidity is expected to decrease significantly, raising concerns about fire danger, especially as winds pick up on Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will remain well below average until a slight warming trend and a return of rain chances on Thursday.
