Toronto Weather: Snowfall Warning Issued for Friday – Prepare for Hazardous Conditions

Toronto Weather: Brace Yourself for a Late-Winter Blast!

Despite spring being just around the corner (officially arriving in eight days!), Old Man Winter isn’t quite ready to relinquish his grip on Toronto and the surrounding areas. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning residents to prepare for potential snowfall on Friday, March 12, 2026.

What to Expect: Snowfall Predictions & Timing

The forecast indicates brief, but potentially intense, snowfall rates of 2 to 4 centimetres between Friday morning and afternoon. While total accumulations aren’t expected to be massive, the rapid snowfall could quickly create slippery and hazardous conditions on roads and highways. The city could see a total of 5 to 8 centimetres before the snow tapers off in the afternoon.

Fortunately, a shift in temperature is anticipated. The snow is likely to transition to rain showers as temperatures climb above the freezing mark. The daytime high is currently predicted to be 3°C, though a wind chill will make it feel like -10°C in the morning.

Travel Advisory: Be Prepared for Difficult Conditions

Environment Canada strongly advises preparing for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Falling temperatures Friday night could lead to icy roads and sidewalks, further exacerbating the risk. Be sure to allow extra travel time and exercise extreme caution.

Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Impact

The impact extends beyond Toronto itself. Areas including Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa, and Whitby could see significantly higher snowfall amounts, ranging from 10 to 15 centimetres from Friday through Saturday morning. Expect periods of mixed snow and rain, particularly in the afternoon and evening. The heaviest snowfall is expected over higher elevations, such as the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Strong Winds for Hamilton & Niagara Region

Residents of Hamilton and the Niagara Region should also be aware of impending strong winds. Southerly winds are expected to develop Friday morning, with gusts potentially reaching 60 to 70 km/h. These winds will strengthen further in the afternoon and evening, shifting to a westerly direction with gusts of 70 to 90 km/h. These winds are expected to subside later Friday night.

Weekend Outlook

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday will bring a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 2°C. Sunday may see periods of snow or rain, with a high of 4°C. Stay tuned to The Weather Network for the latest updates.

Stay safe and be prepared!
