Freeze Warning: Central Florida Braces for Prolonged Cold Snap
ORLANDO, Fla. – After enjoying record-breaking warmth over the weekend, Central Florida is facing a dramatic shift in weather patterns. This isn’t a typical Florida “cold snap”; meteorologists are calling it a “cold wave,” bringing multiple mornings of frost and significant freeze concerns.
Extended Period of Cold
The arctic air will settle in starting Tuesday and remain locked in place through Thursday. Inland areas are expected to experience frosty conditions each morning, with the coldest temperatures anticipated north and west of Interstate 4 (I-4). Freezing temperatures are a real possibility in these regions.
Wednesday morning is forecast to be the coldest point of the week. Gusty winds will exacerbate the chill, driving wind chills down into the 20s and 30s. Daytime temperatures will struggle to reach the 40s, with some areas barely breaking 30 degrees.
This four-day stretch of frigid morning lows in Orlando hasn’t occurred since January 2018. Communities north and west of I-4, such as Ocala, can expect temperatures to dip into the 20s.
Rare Prolonged Cold & Potential Impacts
This extended period of cold is unusual for Central Florida, significantly increasing the risk of frost and freeze damage throughout the week. The National Weather Service (https://www.weather.gov/) is closely monitoring the situation and providing updates.
Don’t anticipate a quick warm-up. High temperatures are predicted to remain below 70 degrees for the next nine days!
Even Colder Air on the Horizon?
The forecast isn’t just concerning for the current cold snap. There’s a possibility of even colder air arriving by the weekend. Some forecast models suggest near-record low temperatures and wind chills potentially dropping into the teens across much of Central Florida.
