Hamilton Weather: Brace for Severe Thunderstorms and a Rollercoaster Week

Southern Ontario, including the Hamilton area, is preparing for a week of dramatic weather shifts, starting with a line of nocturnal thunderstorms expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Residents should be prepared for frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and the possibility of both small and large hail. This isn’t just a typical spring shower; conditions could become severe.

What to Expect: A Detailed Breakdown

A clash between colder air to the north and a surge of mild air from the south is fueling this active weather pattern. The primary threats associated with these thunderstorms include:

  • Frequent Lightning: Be aware of the risk of lightning strikes, especially during the overnight hours.
  • Heavy Downpours: Expect significant rainfall, leading to potential water pooling on roads and affecting travel conditions.
  • Hail: The possibility of small to large hail exists in some locales.
  • Gusty Winds: Strong winds could accompany the storms, potentially causing localized damage.

Special weather statements are currently in effect for southwestern Ontario, and the situation is being closely monitored. The potential for severe storms extending from Michigan adds to the concern.

Rainfall Totals and Potential Flooding

Rainfall totals could be substantial, with areas near Goderich, London, and Sarnia potentially receiving 30-50 mm. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Niagara are likely to see 20-30 mm. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) warns that the already saturated ground has a reduced capacity to absorb further rainfall, increasing the risk of localized flooding. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has already extended its flood outlook, urging caution.

Unseasonably Warm Temperatures

Beyond the storms, southern and eastern Ontario are experiencing an unseasonably warm spell. Daytime highs are expected to reach the high teens to above 20°C – temperatures more typical of late May than mid-April. Toronto’s Pearson International Airport is forecast to record five or six consecutive days near 20°C, significantly exceeding the April average. Windsor is even aiming to set a new benchmark for the warmest temperature in Canada for 2024, with a high of 28°C predicted.

This warmth is driven by strong southwesterly winds, gusting up to 60 km/h, and moisture-rich systems drawing energy from the Gulf of Mexico.

A Dramatic Shift: Cold Front Arriving This Weekend

However, don’t get too comfortable! A strong cold front is expected to sweep across the region Saturday night into Sunday, bringing very windy conditions and a sharp drop in temperatures. By Sunday, daytime highs will plummet to the single digits, with the possibility of flurries, including lake-effect flurries east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Early next week will feel more like late March, with changeable temperatures continuing into the final week of April.
