Weather Forecast Today: Flood Watch Issued for South Florida
A flood watch has been issued for parts of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties through Tuesday evening as a late-season cold front brings several days of rainfall to South Florida. Residents are urged to prepare for potential flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage.
Rainfall Predictions & Drought Relief
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson forecasts 1-2 inches of rain along the Florida Atlantic coast and across much of South Florida from Monday to Thursday. This rainfall is welcome news for areas currently experiencing severe to extreme drought conditions. However, Anderson warns that some locations could receive 4-6 inches of rain from repeating thunderstorms, potentially leading to localized flooding.
Currently, 79% of Florida is experiencing either extreme or exceptional drought levels. This much-needed precipitation offers a glimmer of hope for alleviating these conditions.
Flood Watch Details & Affected Areas
The National Weather Service (NWS) updated its website on April 7th, detailing the flood watch in effect for the east coast metro area. Widespread rainfall of 1-3 inches is expected, with localized amounts potentially reaching 4-6 inches. The NWS specifically highlights the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, creeks, places with poor drainage, and urban areas.
Cities included in the flood watch include:
- Fort Lauderdale
- Hollywood
- Miramar
- Miami
- Hialeah
- Boca Raton
- Jupiter
- Kendall
Rip Current Statement & Additional Hazards
In addition to the flood watch, a rip current statement is in effect for coastal Miami-Dade County from today at 8 p.m. until April 9th at 8 p.m. Coastal Broward County is also under a rip current statement for the same period. Beachgoers are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and heed all warnings from lifeguards.
Short-Term Forecast (April 7th – April 9th)
Showers and thunderstorms are likely throughout the region. The NWS predicts a possible thunderstorm after 5 p.m. today, with new rainfall amounts of three-quarters to one inch. Fort Lauderdale is also expected to experience showers and thunderstorms, with a possible thunderstorm after 4 p.m., and potential rainfall of a quarter to half an inch.
Hilux Fire Update
The rainfall may also aid in dampening the Hilux fire, currently burning 511 acres in Big Cypress National Park. The fire is 0% contained and located 5 miles from Miles City. NBC Miami provides ongoing coverage of the fire.
