Winter Storm Warning Issued for the Pacific Northwest
SEATTLE – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Blizzard Warning for the Cascade Mountains as a series of powerful storm systems are poised to impact the Pacific Northwest this week. Residents are urged to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions, including heavy snowfall, strong winds, and frigid temperatures.
What to Expect: A Multi-Day Weather Event
Western Washington is bracing for several days of unsettled weather. While lowland areas will primarily experience rain and gusty winds, the mountains are facing significant snowfall. The most impactful period is anticipated on Wednesday, with heavier precipitation, stronger winds, and continued accumulation in the higher elevations.
Blizzard Warning Criteria
The NWS issues a Blizzard Warning when the following conditions are met for at least three hours:
- Large amounts of snow
- Sustained winds exceeding 35 mph
- Visibility of less than a quarter of a mile
While snowfall is common in the Cascades, the combination of sustained high winds during a snow event is less frequent, making this warning particularly concerning.
Recent Blizzard Warnings
The NWS Seattle office has issued only seven Blizzard Warnings in its history, with four occurring in the last two years. This highlights the severity of the forecasted conditions.
24-48 Hour Forecast for the Mountains
Significant snowfall is expected in the Cascade Mountains over the next 24 to 48 hours. Travelers should be prepared for challenging conditions and monitor forecasts closely.
Lowland Impacts and Forecast
The unsettled weather pattern will continue through Monday and Tuesday, with colder air increasing the chance of a rain-snow mix in lowland areas, particularly overnight and in the early morning. Overnight temperatures are expected to hover around freezing, while daytime highs should reach the 40s. While major disruptions in lowland areas are not currently anticipated, minor impacts are possible in foothill regions.
A more powerful system is expected to arrive Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday, bringing the most significant impacts of the week. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.
Rain and Wind in Lowlands
Rain will increase in lowland areas, potentially becoming heavy at times, especially on Wednesday. Wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph are possible, making commutes more challenging. The strongest winds are expected Wednesday night.
Snow Levels and Precipitation Totals
Snow levels in the mountains are expected to rise to between 2,500 and 3,000 feet on Wednesday. Some communities may briefly experience a rain-and-snow mix or short bursts of wet snow. Through Friday, the region could see significant precipitation totals.
