Windows 11 Bug: Samsung Device Users Face ‘C:\ is Not Accessible’ Error

Windows 11 Bug Causes Access Issues for Samsung Device Users

Windows 11 has unfortunately continued to experience a series of update-related issues. While February offered a brief respite, March has brought a new headache for some users, particularly those with Samsung devices. Microsoft has confirmed a concerning bug affecting certain Samsung models, resulting in a frustrating “C:\ is not accessible – Access denied” error after installing recent Windows 11 updates.

The ‘C:\ is Not Accessible’ Error: What’s Happening?

As first reported by Neowin, the issue stems from a permission error that prevents users from accessing files and launching applications. This impacts essential programs like Outlook, Office apps, web browsers, system utilities, and even Quick Assist. The error manifests during routine tasks – accessing files, launching applications, or performing administrative duties – without requiring any specific user action.

Compounding the problem, affected users are also reporting difficulties elevating privileges, uninstalling updates, or collecting logs due to permission failures. This significantly hinders troubleshooting and recovery efforts.

Which Devices Are Affected?

Microsoft acknowledges the issue impacts “Samsung Galaxy Book 4 and other Samsung consumer devices” internationally. While the exact cause is still under investigation, suspicion currently points towards a conflict with the Samsung Share application. However, the root cause remains unconfirmed.

Temporary Workarounds and Official Fixes

The online community, particularly on platforms like Reddit, has been actively discussing potential workarounds. Some users have reported success by manually granting their user account permission to access the C: drive through the Security tab in the drive’s properties. However, this fix is cautioned against as it may introduce further complications.

Fortunately, Microsoft has released a patch to address the issue. The March update (KB5077181) and subsequent updates contain the necessary fix. Installing this update is the recommended solution for affected users. It’s important to note that the issue doesn’t affect all Galaxy Book 4 devices, but rather those with a specific software configuration.

Is it a Microsoft or Samsung Issue?

The blame game has begun, with some pointing fingers at Samsung Share. Many argue that if the issue is isolated to devices with Samsung Share installed, the responsibility lies with Samsung to provide an update. Others maintain that as Samsung Share is integrated with Windows, Microsoft bears some responsibility for compatibility testing. Regardless, the quick release of a patch by Microsoft demonstrates their commitment to resolving the issue.
