Halifax Weather: Prepare for a Frigid Weekend and Potential Snowstorm

Halifax residents are bracing for a significant shift in weather conditions this weekend, with parts of Nova Scotia already under weather warnings. The entire province is expected to experience freezing temperatures, and a substantial snowfall event is on the horizon.

Cold Weather Warnings in Effect

Environment Canada has issued cold weather warnings for Cumberland and northern Colchester counties. Wind chill values are predicted to plummet to -25 to -30 degrees Celsius beginning Saturday morning and lasting through Sunday. These dangerously low wind chills significantly increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite, with exposed skin potentially freezing in as little as 10 minutes.

Snowstorm Potential for Halifax

A special weather statement is in effect for the Halifax area, forecasting a system that could bring up to 25 centimetres of snow and strong winds starting Sunday night and continuing through Tuesday morning. The municipality is also anticipated to experience wind chills in the -20s Friday night through Sunday.

Allister Aalders, meteorologist for CityNews Halifax, explains, “It’s not uncommon to have wind chills in this range at times in the winter, but the elevated wind chills do increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite; exposed skin can freeze in as little as 10 minutes.”

Long-Duration Snowfall Possible

The system developing over the weekend is expected to deliver a prolonged period of snowfall. Aalders warns, “This could be a long-duration snowfall event. It’s possible that at a minimum we could see up to 20 cm of snow in the Halifax area by early Tuesday, with the possibility that amounts could go even higher.”

Residents are urged to closely monitor the forecast throughout the weekend and prepare for challenging travel conditions. Stay informed with the latest updates from The Weather Network and Environment Canada.
