Hail Storms: Midwest and Northeast Brace for Severe Weather

Severe Weather Threat: Midwest and Northeast Under Siege from Hail and Tornadoes
A dangerous weather system is sweeping across the Midwest and Northeast, putting over 132 million people at risk from severe thunderstorms, including the threat of large hail, destructive winds, and tornadoes. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as conditions rapidly evolve.
The Threat of Large Hail
A major concern is the potential for softball-sized hail – and the significant damage it can inflict in a short amount of time. More than 11 million people across seven states are currently under a Tornado Watch. According to the FOX Forecast Center, softball-sized hail can fall at speeds approaching 100 mph, comparable to a Major League fastball. This velocity can shatter windshields and cause widespread destruction to homes and property.
Scattered hail up to 4 inches in diameter – roughly the size of a softball – is expected across parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. A more widespread threat of similarly large hail is forecast for portions of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, as millions brace for severe weather through the evening hours. This isn’t a home run scenario; the potential for serious damage is very real.
A dramatic example of the power of hail occurred recently when a massive hailstone punctured a windshield of a FOX Weather Exclusive Storm Tracker, underscoring just how dangerous these storms can be.
Beyond Hail: Tornadoes and Flooding
For the over 11 million Americans under a Tornado Watch, the threat of damaging hail is compounded by the risk of tornadoes. These powerful storms can produce large, fast-falling hail capable of causing significant damage in seconds. Stay with FOX Weather for real-time radar images and emergency alerts.
Adding to the complexity, evacuations are underway in Michigan due to rising water levels at the Cheboygan Dam. Significant snow and rain have contributed to the rising water, potentially leading to a collapse. The dam is dangerously close to its capacity, and a levee breach has already prompted evacuations near the Little Black River Watershed.
Severe Weather Across Multiple States
FOX Weather Exclusive Storm Tracker has been tracking warned storms in Eldora, Iowa, while meteorologists provide real-time analysis. A Tornado Watch has been issued for parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, threatening another 3+ million people through 11 p.m. CDT. The threat includes the possibility of strong tornadoes, softball-size hail, and wind gusts up to 75 mph.
Portions of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are also under a Tornado Watch through 10 PM CDT, facing a similar threat. Flooding has been reported at Pellston Regional Airport in Michigan, forcing its closure due to 10-12 inches of accumulated rain.
A Level 3 Severe Weather Threat
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 3 of 5 severe weather threat zone across 15 states today. While a Level 4 risk was considered, meteorologists held off due to uncertainty about storm development. A dangerous combination of record-breaking snowpack and relentless rain has created a high-stakes flooding emergency in the Great Lakes region.
The atmospheric setup is fueled by moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, creating a perfect storm for flooding in cities like Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie, and Traverse City. A Flash Flood Warning has been issued in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, due to the imminent failure of the Big Falls Dam.
Power Outages and Travel Disruptions
Over 50,000 customers in Southeast Wisconsin are without power after overnight storms. Utility crews are working to restore service, but additional outages are likely. Severe weather has also triggered significant flight delays at Chicago’s Midway and O’Hare airports.
Stay informed and prepared. Monitor local forecasts, heed warnings from authorities, and have a severe weather plan in place.
