Crimson Desert Game: A Deep Dive into Performance Across Platforms

Crimson Desert, one of the most anticipated RPGs of recent years, has finally arrived on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. After years of waiting, players are eager to explore its vast open world. While our initial review awarded the game a 7 out of 10, we wanted to provide a detailed breakdown of its performance on consoles, and a comparison to the PC experience.

PC: The Optimal Platform for Crimson Desert

Let’s be upfront: if you’re looking for the best possible experience, PC is the way to go. Crimson Desert truly shines on a powerful PC rig. The game’s extensive optimization options allow for a visually stunning experience, even on older graphics cards. Determining PC performance is always tricky due to the wide range of hardware configurations, but the flexibility is undeniable. This is a common trend for third-party titles, and Crimson Desert is no exception.

Console Performance: PS5 vs. Xbox Series X

Consoles offer a more standardized experience, but that doesn’t mean performance is without its quirks. My colleague and I have put both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions through their paces to give you a clear picture of what to expect.

PlayStation 5 Pro Impressions

The game offers three graphical modes: Performance (1080p/60FPS), Balanced (1440p/40FPS), and Quality (4K/30FPS). Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is almost essential for a smooth experience. Without VRR enabled, screen tearing was noticeable, even in less populated areas. With VRR, the tearing disappears, providing a much cleaner visual experience.

However, even with VRR, Performance and Balanced modes suffer from significant environmental pop-in. Foliage and terrain load-in are distracting, with objects almost ‘morphing’ onto the screen. Quality mode largely eliminates this issue, but the 30FPS framerate isn’t ideal for an action-packed game like this. It’s a frustrating trade-off.

While the 60FPS of Performance mode and 40FPS of Balanced mode are generally stable in the opening hours, reports suggest framerate drops in more populated areas.

Xbox Series X Impressions

The Xbox Series X experience mirrors many of the issues found on the PlayStation 5. The game appears to have parity between the two consoles. Similar to the PS5, VRR improves the experience, but environmental pop-in remains a distraction. However, a more significant issue on Xbox Series X is noticeable input lag. Actions feel delayed, making combat less responsive and more reliant on button-mashing. The delay is particularly noticeable when navigating menus.

Despite these issues, Crimson Desert can be visually impressive when you take a moment to appreciate the scenery. The draw distance is remarkable, and the environments can be breathtaking once they’ve fully loaded in.

Ongoing Optimization and Future Prospects

Developer Pearl Abyss has already released a patch addressing some visual issues, and further improvements are expected. It’s reasonable to hope that the game will run and look better in the coming weeks. However, for now, PC remains the recommended platform, provided you have the hardware to support it. For a comprehensive look at the visual differences, check out the screenshot gallery above, showcasing each mode’s resolution and graphical fidelity.

Ultimately, the best mode depends on your priorities: stunning resolution with a stable but lower framerate (Quality), or a higher framerate with visual compromises (Performance or Balanced). The choice is yours.
