Poland Tech Investment Surge: Future Tech Poland Program Fuels Innovation

Poland’s Tech Sector Receives Major Investment Boost

A significant injection of capital is set to revitalize Poland’s technology sector, thanks to the newly launched Future Tech Poland program. Three leading funds – Cogito Capital, Balnord, and Expeditions – have secured funding agreements with Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) and the European Investment Fund (EIF), marking the first wave of investments under this ambitious initiative.

Addressing the Venture Capital Gap

The Polish venture capital (VC) sector has long awaited robust public support, particularly financial backing. Funding gaps exist across all stages of business growth, from early-stage development to aggressive scaling and expansion. The Future Tech Poland program is designed to address this critical need, providing vital resources for technological companies.

€85 Million Allocated to Three Key Funds

Through a collaborative effort between BGK and EIF, a total of 365 million PLN (approximately €85 million) will be distributed among the three selected funds: Cogito Fund II (a growth fund) and Expeditions Fund II and Balnord Fund I (venture capital funds). These funds have established track records and strong local market presence.

Strategic Investment Areas

The investments will prioritize key areas crucial for Poland’s future competitiveness, including:

  • Defense
  • Dual-use technologies
  • Spacetech
  • Enterprise software
  • Fintech
  • Medtech

Benefits Beyond Investors

Mirosław Czekaj, CEO of BGK, emphasized that investing in technology companies benefits not only investors but also enhances Poland and Europe’s overall competitiveness. He announced further fund announcements are forthcoming, with a total public funding pool of 1.5 billion PLN allocated to the program.

“We anticipate that the capital unlocked through Future Tech Poland – potentially reaching 5 billion PLN – will support 150-200 innovative companies,” Czekaj stated.

Fund-Specific Allocations and Strategies

  • Cogito Fund II (€30 million): Focused on growth capital investments (Series B and beyond), supporting companies scaling internationally, particularly in the US market.
  • Balnord Fund I (€24 million): Investing in breakthrough and dual-use technologies, including space and medical sectors.
  • Expeditions Fund II (€31 million): Targeting the security sector, with a focus on AI, advanced defense technologies, cybersecurity, and space applications.

A Catalyst for Private Investment

Fund managers believe Future Tech Poland will act as a catalyst for attracting private investment. Sylwester Janik of Cogito Capital Partners highlighted the program’s strategic importance, particularly for funds investing in more mature projects. Marcin Kowalik of Balnord Fund emphasized the need to build a strong Polish capital market and attract institutional investors to dual-use and defense technologies.

Mikołaj Firlej, co-founder of Expeditions, envisions Poland becoming a hub for dual-use technology, supporting ambitious entrepreneurs in developing the future of the European defense sector.
