The End of an Era: Apple Discontinues the Mac Pro

It’s official: Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that the iconic Mac Pro is being discontinued. As of Thursday afternoon, the Mac Pro has been removed from Apple’s website, with the “buy” page now redirecting to the general Mac homepage. Apple has also stated there are no plans for future Mac Pro hardware.

A History of Reinvention

The Mac Pro has undergone significant transformations throughout its lifespan. The current industrial design, released in 2019 alongside the Pro Display XDR (also recently discontinued), initially featured Intel processors. A refresh with the M2 Ultra chip followed in June 2023, but it hasn’t received an update since. Despite its $6,999 price tag, it lagged behind the capabilities of newer Apple silicon, especially considering the debut of the M3 Ultra chip in the Mac Studio last year.

The Mac Studio Takes the Lead

With the Mac Pro’s discontinuation, the Mac Studio is clearly positioned as Apple’s flagship ‘pro’ desktop. The Mac Studio offers impressive configurations, including the M3 Ultra chip with a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, up to 256GB of unified memory, and a massive 16TB of SSD storage. This makes it a compelling alternative for professionals seeking high performance.

Apple’s Current Desktop Lineup

Currently, Apple offers three desktop Macs:

  • iMac
  • Mac mini
  • Mac Studio

And three laptops:

  • MacBook Air
  • MacBook Pro
  • MacBook Neo

A Strongest Mac Lineup Ever?

Many believe this represents the strongest Mac lineup in years, if not ever. The inclusion of the MacBook Neo at the entry-level provides a diverse range of options across different price points, configurations, and form factors. The recent release of macOS Tahoe 26.2 further enhances the ecosystem with a new low-latency feature utilizing RDMA over Thunderbolt 5, allowing users to connect multiple Macs for increased performance – a feature some speculated would hasten the Mac Pro’s demise.

The Right Decision?

Apple faced a critical decision: update the Mac Pro or discontinue it. Continuing to sell a machine with the M2 Ultra at such a premium price would have been a disservice to consumers. Discontinuing the Mac Pro and focusing on the Mac Studio appears to be the logical choice. While some Mac Pro loyalists will undoubtedly be disappointed, the writing has been on the wall for some time.
