White Sox to Honor Manager Ozzie Guillen with Number Retirement
The Chicago White Sox are set to honor a pivotal figure in their franchise history: manager Ozzie Guillen. In a surprise announcement during the team’s home opener, the White Sox revealed plans to retire Guillen’s number 13 uniform on August 8th.
The emotional announcement unfolded live on CHSN, with host Chuck Garfien alongside former manager Guillen and White Sox legend Scott Podsednik. Podsednik delivered the news, reading from an envelope containing the momentous declaration.
“The Chicago White Sox announce today that 2005 World Series-winning manager Ozzie Guillen will be honored on Saturday, August 8… with a special ceremony retiring his number 13 uniform,” Podsednik announced. “The shortstop who played for 13 seasons with the White Sox will be the 13th player in franchise history to have his number retired, and first manager. Mr. Ozzie Guillen, your legacy will forever be etched.”

Guillen, known for his quick wit, initially joked, “Another bobblehead?” before the full weight of the announcement settled in. The stadium erupted in cheers as the news was broadcast over the public address system, with fans chanting Guillen’s name.
A Legacy of Championship Baseball
Ozzie Guillen led the White Sox to their first World Series victory in 88 years in 2005, defeating the Houston Astros. His leadership and strategic brilliance cemented his place as a White Sox icon. He has remained connected to the team as an analyst since 2019.
The number retirement ceremony will be a fitting tribute to a manager who not only brought a championship to the South Side but also captured the hearts of White Sox fans. It’s a moment that will forever be etched in the team’s history.
