William Sawalich Secures First NASCAR Win at Rockingham Speedway
William Sawalich etched his name in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series history books on Sunday, dominating the North Carolina Education Lottery 250 at Rockingham Speedway to secure his maiden victory. The young driver controlled the final third of the race with impressive skill and speed.
A Dominating Performance
Sawalich showcased his talent by laying down a blistering fast lap, setting the quickest time on the track. He seized control of the final stage after Brent Crews encountered tire issues while leading, and never relinquished his position. This win marks a significant milestone in Sawalich’s burgeoning career.
“It means everything,” an emotional William Sawalich shared after the race. “It’s obviously been a tough year last year and a tough start to the year this year. These boys mean everything to me. They were here with me through everything, and my family. Gosh, it feels good to get it done here in Rockingham in front of an awesome crowd. Thank you everybody for coming out.”
From Debut to Victory Lane
This victory is particularly sweet considering Sawalich’s relatively recent entry into the NOAPS series, making his debut at Homestead late in 2024. While he demonstrated potential with back-to-back runner-up finishes at Portland and Madison last year, it took 42 starts for him to finally reach the top step of the podium.
The race wasn’t without its challenges. Sawalich had to fend off determined challenges from seasoned veterans Brandon Jones and Justin Allgaier. His preparation proved crucial in navigating the late-race pressure. “Well funny enough lap traffic took me out last year, so it was kind of running through my head a little bit,” Sawalich explained. “But man, I just studied the race last year and just calmed down and everything was fine.”
McFarland’s Challenging Debut
While Sawalich celebrated a triumphant day, Cleetus McFarland experienced a more difficult NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series debut at Rockingham. Despite battling throughout the race, a series of unfortunate events hampered his progress.
- A speeding penalty in Stage 3 sent McFarland to the back of the pack.
- A spin while navigating a turn brought out a caution flag.
McFarland ultimately finished 32nd, six laps down, but gained valuable experience in his first NOAPS start. You can find more information about the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series on the official NASCAR website.
