Sporting CP Faces Santa Clara in Crucial Primeira Liga Clash
Sporting Lisbon returns from the international break with a vital match against Santa Clara at Estadio Jose Alvalade on Friday. A victory is crucial for the Lions as they aim to secure a third consecutive top-flight title. Currently, Sporting sits seven points behind league leaders Porto, with a game in hand, while Santa Clara occupies 13th place, comfortably six points above the relegation playoff zone.
Recent Form and Champions League Ambitions
The postponement of Sporting’s matchday 26 clash with Tondela allowed Porto to extend their lead, and Benfica also closed the gap during that period. However, Gameweek 27 saw Sporting bounce back with a convincing 4-1 victory at Alverca, spearheaded by a brace from Pedro Goncalves. This win followed a dramatic comeback against Bodo/Glimt, securing a historic Champions League quarter-final berth against Arsenal – a reunion with former player Vitor Gyokeres, who now plays for the London club.
Luis Suarez has been in exceptional form, leading the Primeira Liga scoring charts with 24 goals, keeping Sporting competitive on multiple fronts, including the Taca de Portugal, where they hold a semi-final advantage over Porto.
The Challenge from Santa Clara
A win on Friday would temporarily reduce the gap to four points before Porto’s match against Famalicao. Sporting’s home record is impressive, having won their last 15 matches at Estadio Jose Alvalade, giving manager Rui Borges confidence.
Santa Clara, however, arrives in good form, going five games unbeaten (W3, D2) under manager Petit. After a difficult spell between early December and March, where they went 11 league matches without a win, they’ve experienced a significant turnaround, including three consecutive victories built on defensive solidity. Recent clean sheets against Vitoria de Guimaraes (2-0), AVS (1-0), and Gil Vicente (1-0) demonstrate their improved resilience, with Vinicius Lopes scoring a stoppage-time winner in the latter.
Santa Clara have also shown promise away from home, avoiding defeat in their last three matches (W1, D2) and remaining unbeaten in regulation time during their previous two visits to Sporting.
Team News and Potential Lineups
Sporting Lisbon will be without Nuno Santos, who remains doubtful after being forced off against Alverca. Midfielder Giorgi Kochorashvili continues his recovery, while Luis Guilherme and Fotis Ioannidis are also sidelined. However, Geovany Quenda is nearing a return from injury.
Santa Clara benefited from a quiet international break and have a largely fit squad. Matheus Araujo remains unavailable due to a long-term cruciate ligament injury.
Sporting Lisbon Possible Starting Lineup:
Silva; Fresneda, Quaresma, Inacio, Mangas; Hjulmand, Morita; Catamo, Trincao, Goncalves; Suarez
Santa Clara Possible Starting Lineup:
Batista; Soares, Da Silva, Lima, Romao; Serginho, Ferreira, Klismahn; Lopes, Fernando, G Silva
Match Prediction
Despite Santa Clara’s defensive improvements, the quality gap between the two teams is evident. Containing Sporting’s potent attack, which has scored a league-high 68 goals, will be a significant challenge. Considering the reverse fixture ended 2-1, a comfortable home win for Sporting appears likely, especially given their record of scoring at least three goals in 10 of their last 15 home matches.
