Magnus Carlsen Starts Strong at Grenke Chess Freestyle Open

The Grenke Chess Freestyle Open is underway in Karlsruhe, Germany, and reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen has once again demonstrated his prowess, securing a victory in the opening round. This tournament, part of the larger Grenke Chess Festival, has attracted over 3,500 participants, setting a new record for the event – surpassed only by the 4,600 children who participated in the 2025 SuperNationals in the U.S.

A Tournament of Records and Opportunities

The festival features both traditional chess and the innovative Freestyle Chess (Chess960) format. Players can switch between formats before round five, carrying their points with them. The stakes are high, with a €60,000 first prize and, crucially, qualification spots for the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027 and the FIDE Freestyle Women’s Chess World Championship 2026.

Round One Upsets and Notable Performances

While Carlsen’s win was expected, the first round wasn’t without its surprises. CM Aleksander Kumala of Poland held GM Levon Aronian, a Chess960 expert, to a draw – a significant achievement. The biggest upset of the round saw GM Nikita Vitiugov fall to India’s FM Sreyas Payyappat.

Carlsen’s Game and the Opening Moves

Magnus Carlsen’s opponent, WGM Narmin Khalafova of Azerbaijan, put up a strong fight, responding well to Carlsen’s aggressive opening. However, a critical mistake on move 20 ultimately cost Khalafova the game. The opening move, 1.d4, was made by Wolfgang Grenke, the sponsor of the event. The tournament utilizes a 90-minute time control with a 30-second increment per move, allowing players ample time for strategic calculation.
