Dutch Football Clubs Unite to Tackle Rising Aggression

The beautiful game isn’t always played in the spirit of sportsmanship. Across the Netherlands, and indeed globally, sporting rivalries can unfortunately spill over into unacceptable behaviour. Recognizing this growing issue, UDI’19/Swiss Sense, Blauw Geel’38/Jumbo, and vv Gemert are taking a proactive stance, uniting to combat the increasing instances of verbal and physical aggression both on and off the pitch.

This groundbreaking collaboration was officially cemented on Saturday with the signing of the ‘Together Strong for Sporting and Safe Football’ covenant by the three club chairpersons. The event, held in the UDI’19 board room, was described by attendees as a significant moment – three major regional amateur football clubs putting aside competitive differences to address a shared concern.

Addressing a Growing Problem

The problem stems from broader societal trends. The increasing coarseness, hardening attitudes, and individualization prevalent in society are unfortunately permeating football clubs, which often serve as a microcosm of the community. This is leading to a worrying surge in incidents, ranging from inappropriate conduct to unsportsmanlike behaviour involving players, staff, parents, and spectators.

“We’re all experiencing the same issues,” stated Tini van Hek, representing UDI’19’s Sportsmanship and Respect committee, prior to the signing. He highlighted the detrimental effect of changing attitudes, leading to the loss of vital volunteers – referees, coaches, team managers, and coordinators – individuals crucial to the functioning of these clubs. “We don’t want to let this game, which we all love, be spoiled.”

Sabine van de Wetering, speaking on behalf of vv Gemert, and also serving as a confidential advisor, committee member for Sportsmanship and Respect, and club referee, expressed gratitude to UDI’19. “UDI opened their arms and said, ‘Benefit from our knowledge and experience.’ Together, we’re now making a stand and saying, ‘Some things we will not accept.’”

The Covenant: A Collaborative Approach

The covenant outlines a commitment to actively collaborate to foster a safe and respectful sporting environment. Key initiatives include:

  • Establishing easily accessible points of contact for reporting concerns.
  • Improving communication channels between the clubs.
  • Organizing joint activities and educational programs.

The clubs emphasize a preventative approach, not just punitive measures. The focus is on understanding and addressing the root causes of unsportsmanlike conduct, verbal abuse, and physical aggression. They aim to equip individuals with the tools to manage their behaviour and promote a positive atmosphere.

Gemert, UDI, and Blauw Geel hope their initiative will inspire other clubs in the region to join their cause. This collaborative effort represents a powerful message: respect, sportsmanship, and safety are paramount in football.
