LA28: Global Ticket Sales Begin After Historic Presale
Global ticket sales for the highly anticipated 2028 Los Angeles Olympics officially commenced on Thursday, following a record-shattering first week of local presales. This surge in demand underscores the excitement surrounding the Games, which are heavily reliant on private revenue to ensure a financially sustainable event.
Record-Breaking Presale Numbers
LA28 announced that it surpassed all previous Olympic Games in ticket sales during the opening week of the presale. Every ticket in this initial phase was exclusively offered to residents of Los Angeles and Oklahoma City, despite some concerns raised regarding pricing, fees, and overall availability. The initial response demonstrates a strong appetite for the Games.
The $28 Ticket Initiative
Hundreds of thousands of $28 tickets – touted as the most affordable Olympic tickets in modern history – were quickly purchased by local fans. While the initiative aimed to provide accessible options, some buyers expressed frustration with associated costs and limited availability. LA28 addressed these concerns, stating that the lowest-priced tickets were always expected to be in high demand.
“The success of the locals presale speaks for itself,” stated LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover. “We’re thrilled by the level of interest and enthusiasm in tickets to the Games.”
Global Launch: Drop 1 Details
The global sales launch, dubbed “Drop 1,” is underway and continues through April 19th. Access is granted to fans who were previously selected through a lottery system and assigned specific time slots. Tickets encompass a wide range of Olympic events, including the prestigious opening and closing ceremonies.
Addressing Ticket Pricing Concerns
Organizers acknowledged that the marketing emphasis on the $28 entry-level tickets led to some surprise when fans discovered the limited quantity and higher prices for many events. Allison Katz-Mayfield, LA28’s senior vice president for games delivery revenue, explained to Reuters that this was anticipated, as the most affordable tickets were always expected to sell out quickly.
“We really wanted to make sure that the locals had access to the most affordable tickets and we saw that come to life through this presale,” Katz-Mayfield said, adding that additional low-cost tickets will be released in subsequent sales phases. LA28 has committed to making over one million tickets available to the public at the $28 price point.
Ticket Price Breakdown
- Nearly half of all Olympic tickets are priced under $200.
- More than three-quarters of tickets, including finals, are under $400.
- Only approximately 5% of tickets exceed $1,000.
Financial Stability and Future Sales
Demand has exceeded expectations since the initial registration phase. As the global launch began, roughly a third of the tickets currently on sale were priced below $200. The organizing committee faces pressure to deliver a fiscally responsible Games without relying on taxpayer funds. LA28’s $7 billion+ operation is primarily funded through ticket sales, sponsorships, and hospitality revenue. Strong ticket sales, coupled with sponsorship income, are positive indicators of the Games’ financial health.
Beware of Unofficial Resale Platforms
LA28 has cautioned fans against purchasing tickets from unofficial resale platforms before the launch of its verified resale program in 2027. Tickets acquired through unauthorized channels may be speculative or invalid. Fans are encouraged to wait for the official resale platform to ensure authenticity and security.
