
Prime Video Greenlights ‘Calamities’: A Texas-Sized Crime Thriller
Prime Video has announced a straight-to-series order for Calamities, a high-stakes crime thriller set in the heart of Texas. The series, helmed by David Weil (known for Hunters), promises a gripping narrative filled with suspense and compelling characters.
What is ‘Calamities’ About?
Calamities plunges viewers into a quiet border town irrevocably changed when a drug deal spirals into violent chaos. The story follows a complex web of individuals caught in the aftermath: a determined small-town sheriff confronting her past, a chillingly sociopathic hit woman, an ambitious FBI agent, and a ruthless cartel. The official synopsis from Prime Video describes it as “a gripping and propulsive Texas crime thriller like no other.”
The Creative Team Behind the Series
David Weil not only serves as showrunner, writer, and director but also executive produces alongside Natalie Laine Williams through their production banner, Please Enjoy. Glen Powell and Dan Cohen’s Barnstorm production company are also on board, with Ryan Schwartz as co-executive producer. This collaboration brings together a talented team with a proven track record in delivering captivating television.

David Weil’s Expanding Universe at Prime Video
This series marks Weil’s latest venture with Prime Video, adding to his impressive portfolio that includes Hunters, Solos, and Citadel. He’s also the creator of Apple TV’s Invasion and has recently penned Extraction 3 for Netflix. His current projects include a co-written spec script, Supermax, sold to Miramax, and a film about journalist Evan Gershkovich. Weil is also set to direct his original script, Tyrant, for Amazon/MGM.
Glen Powell’s Barnstorm Production Company
Barnstorm, founded by Glen Powell and Dan Cohen, is rapidly becoming a force in the entertainment industry. They recently secured the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with A24, including a series adaptation and a feature film. They’ve also wrapped season two of Chad Powers for Hulu and are currently in production on The Comeback King with Universal.
