Former Raptors Star Chris Boucher Set to Join Shanghai Sharks in Major CBA Move

The landscape of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) is shifting once again. In a surprising roster move, the Shanghai Sharks have reportedly decided to part ways with three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee, clearing the path for a familiar face for Canadian basketball fans: Chris Boucher.

The Exit of JaVale McGee

JaVale McGee’s tenure in China was brief. After just eight games with the Sharks, the 38-year-old veteran center has been waived. Despite his championship pedigree with the Lakers and Warriors, McGee’s impact in Shanghai was modest, averaging 5.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in approximately 11 minutes per contest.

McGee’s journey has been one of the most nomadic in recent basketball history, spanning stints with the NBA, Australia, and Puerto Rico. While his time with the Sharks has ended, his legacy as a versatile big man remains intact.

Enter Chris Boucher: A Canadian Powerhouse Heading East

Taking McGee’s place is Chris Boucher, a player well-known in Canada for his incredible rise through the ranks of the Toronto Raptors. The 33-year-old veteran brings a level of athleticism and intensity that the Shanghai Sharks are eager to integrate into their lineup.

Boucher’s Impressive Pedigree

Boucher isn’t just a veteran; he is a proven winner. His career highlights include:

n
• NBA Champion: He was part of the 2018 Golden State Warriors championship team and played a pivotal role in the Toronto Raptors’ historic 2019 NBA title.
• Raptors Legacy: With over 400 appearances for Toronto, he averaged 8.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, becoming a fan favourite for his high-energy plays.
• Recent Experience: Most recently, Boucher spent time with the Boston Celtics, where he provided depth in the frontcourt.

What This Means for the Shanghai Sharks

By replacing McGee with Boucher, the Sharks are opting for more mobility and versatility. Boucher’s ability to stretch the floor and defend multiple positions could provide a spark for the team as they look to climb the CBA standings.

For Canadian sports enthusiasts, seeing a former Raptors star take his talents to the international stage is a testament to the global reach of the game. As Boucher settles into his new role in China, all eyes will be on whether he can recreate the magic he brought to the Scotiabank Arena.
