Drake Transfer: Indiana Basketball Guard Enters Portal, Roster Changes Loom

Indiana Basketball Guard Jason Drake to Explore Transfer Options

BLOOMINGTON – In a developing story for Indiana University basketball, guard Jason Drake has announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to reports from 247Sports. This news adds another layer of complexity to the Hoosiers’ roster situation as they navigate the offseason.

Roster Dynamics and Available Spots

Indiana already faced significant roster turnover with six players, including four starters, graduating. Only three incoming freshmen are slated to join the team. Drake’s decision further emphasizes the need for strategic additions through the transfer portal. The transfer window for Division I basketball is set for a 15-day period, running from April 7-21, providing a limited timeframe for teams to reshape their lineups.

Trent Sisley’s Return Offers Stability

Amidst the departures, there’s positive news for Indiana fans. On3 reported Tuesday that Santa Claus native Trent Sisley intends to return to IU, providing a boost to the team’s frontcourt. This return offers a degree of stability as the Hoosiers look to fill the gaps left by graduating players and potential transfers.

Drake’s Challenging Season and Career Journey

Unfortunately, Drake’s time in Bloomington was hampered by a lower-body injury sustained in practice prior to the team’s trip to Puerto Rico for exhibition games. He remained sidelined throughout the entire season, despite initial hopes for a return in late November, as communicated by Indiana coach Darian DeVries. DeVries had envisioned Drake contributing valuable depth to the backcourt, supporting players like Conor Enright and Tayton Conerway.

Drake brought a diverse collegiate experience to Indiana, having previously played for Cleveland State, Butler Community College, and Drexel. During the 2023-24 season at Drexel, he showcased his abilities as a full-time starter, averaging 11.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, while demonstrating a strong shooting touch from beyond the arc with a 39.6% three-point percentage.

Looking Ahead: Roster Building Under DeVries

Indiana opted out of postseason play after narrowly missing an NCAA Tournament berth. Now, Coach DeVries, alongside newly appointed executive director of basketball Ryan Carr, will focus on strategically building out the team’s roster for the upcoming season. The transfer portal will be a crucial tool in this process, as they seek to add talent and depth to compete in the Big Ten.
