Trouble Calling (Dialed In) has emerged as the third black-type winner for his stakes-winning dam, securing a narrow victory in Friday’s Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland. Despite not being a favored pick in the competitive field, the Donamire homebred showcased resilience and determination.
A Hard-Fought Victory
The race saw Carson Street (Street Sense) setting a brisk pace, with fractions of :21.91 and :44.47. Trouble Calling initially lagged behind, but demonstrated a powerful surge nearing the stretch. Facing a challenging wide path, the colt remained focused and ultimately prevailed, narrowly denying Kinnon LaRose a stakes win with his first Keeneland runner, Oscar’s Hope (Twirling Candy).
“He’s always been a horse that had a lot of speed, so we thought we were going to be right there pretty close, but the track was not playing the best for him,” explained jockey Luis Saez. “It was kind of a little deep, so he took a little while to get going, but when he saw [he was in] the clear at the three-eighths [pole], he started to get going and he finished really strong.”
Building on a Promising Career
Trouble Calling has consistently shown promise, placing in four of his first five starts, including a runner-up finish last October and at the Fair Grounds in January. He finally broke through with a commanding six-length victory in New Orleans in February. This Lafayette Stakes win marks the 35th stakes winner for his sire, Dialed In, and the 45th stakes winner from a daughter of Into Mischief.
Adding to the family’s success, Trouble Calling’s half-brother, Troubleshooting (Not This Time), a winner of the GI Franklin-Simpson Stakes and Keeneland’s GIII Bryan Station Stakes, is a strong contender for the upcoming GI Maker’s Mark Mile.
Pedigree and Future Prospects
The dam, Into Trouble, is also the mother of a juvenile filly by Nashville, a yearling colt by the same stallion, and was recently bred with Kantharos. The third dam boasts impressive lineage, producing MSW Imagine (Giant’s Causeway) and Maximus (Lemon Drop Kid), a champion all-weather horse in Singapore.
