Bruins Trade Deadline: Sweeney Stands Firm, Adds Depth for Playoff Push

BOSTON – Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney navigated the 2026 NHL trade deadline with a cautious yet calculated approach, prioritizing the team’s existing core while adding depth for a strong playoff push. The Bruins, currently holding a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, received reinforcements on Friday, signaling Sweeney’s commitment to the current roster’s potential.

“I think the group deserves the opportunity to continue to forge forward…It wasn’t just about collecting any asset and to take away from the fabric of our group,” Sweeney explained. “We had charted a course last year that we knew this wasn’t going to be one and done. Our intentions were to get back to where we are and be the most competitive group we can.”

Acquiring Lukas Reichel

The Bruins acquired forward Lukas Reichel from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. Reichel, a former first-round pick (17th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2020, brings a dynamic skillset to Boston. He’s appeared in 19 NHL games this season, registering two goals and three assists, and has also showcased his offensive capabilities in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks, tallying 13 points in 23 games.

“He’s spent a lot of time in the league, he’s had some success. Obviously, a high-profile draft. Great speed, two-position player,” Sweeney noted. “We look at it and say it’s an area where we can improve our hockey club, playing with a little more speed.”

Adding Forward Depth: Gendron and Rizzo

In a separate transaction, the Bruins added forwards Alexis Gendron and Massimo Rizzo from the Philadelphia Flyers, sending forward Brett Harrison and defenseman Jackson Edward in return. Gendron, a seventh-round pick in 2022, has been a consistent point producer in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, amassing 22 points in 47 games. Rizzo, a seventh-round pick originally of the Carolina Hurricanes, brings ECHL and AHL experience, with 22 points in 29 games with the Reading Royals this season.

Future Considerations and AHL Assignments

Sweeney expressed well wishes to Harrison and Edward, acknowledging their potential while emphasizing the opportunity for growth in their new organization. Reichel, Gendron, and Rizzo will all report to the AHL’s Providence Bruins to acclimate to the team’s system.

The Bruins face a crucial matchup against the Washington Capitals on Saturday, trailing them by four points in the playoff race. Sweeney is confident in the current roster’s ability to maintain their playoff position. “We stayed committed, there’s no question we didn’t deviate from what we felt was the right choice,” Sweeney stated. “Hopefully that pays dividends right now with the guys that are still here, because they’ve earned that right to carry us forward.”
