Arnold Ebiketie to Patriots: A Potential Pass Rush Solution?

The New England Patriots are reportedly pursuing free agent edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, according to recent reports. This move comes at a crucial time for the Patriots, who have recently experienced departures in their defensive line, leaving a void in their pass-rushing capabilities.

Patriots’ Pass Rush Needs

Despite a surprising 14-win season and a Super Bowl appearance, the Patriots’ pass rush was a noticeable weakness in 2024. Ranking near the bottom of the NFL with just 35 sacks, the team clearly needs to bolster its ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks. Harold Landry led the team with 8.5 sacks, followed by K’Lavon Chaisson with 7.5. However, Chaisson has since signed with the Washington Commanders, and Anfernee Jennings was recently released, further thinning the ranks.

Enter Arnold Ebiketie

According to Boston Globe Patriots insider Christopher Price, the Patriots have reached out to representatives for Arnold Ebiketie. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive end/edge rusher has accumulated 16.5 sacks over the past four years with the Falcons. Ebiketie, 27, could provide valuable depth for a New England team that is actively reshaping its defensive front.

Ebiketie’s Career Overview

Drafted in the second round by Atlanta in 2022, Ebiketie struggled to secure a consistent starting role. While he appeared in 67 of 68 possible games, he only started 12. However, his production has been steadily increasing. In 2023, he recorded 6 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and 41 tackles. He followed that up with another 6 sacks and 12 hits in 2024, along with an impressive 64 tackles.

Financial Implications

The Patriots currently have $31.5 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap. Ebiketie, coming off a four-year rookie contract that paid him $8.8 million, should easily fit within their budget. A short-term deal is likely to cost around $4 million per year, similar to what the Patriots were paying Anfernee Jennings.

A Logical Replacement?

Ebiketie’s size is comparable to Jennings (6’2”, 255 lbs), and his recent performance suggests he could be an immediate upgrade. Given his age (27, one year older than Jennings), the Patriots’ interest in Ebiketie appears to be a logical move to fill the void left by Jennings’ release. The team recently signed Dre’Mont Jones, but adding another capable edge rusher like Ebiketie would significantly improve their defensive depth and potential.
