Ready or Not 2: Here I Come – A Deep Dive into the Twisted Sequel
Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective behind the original 2019 hit, returns with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, promising more twisted fun and sadistic games. The directing duo, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, are confident in their Samara Weaving-led follow-up, and Searchlight Pictures is eager to showcase it to press well ahead of its March 20th release – a strong indicator of their belief in the film.
A Near Disaster Before Filming Even Began
The road to the sequel wasn’t without its hurdles. Just ten days before filming was scheduled to start, star Samara Weaving suffered a back injury that threatened to derail the entire production. “I don’t think we’ve ever been more anxious about the prep of a movie and whether or not it was going to happen,” admits Gillett. Weaving’s condition was so severe she couldn’t move, leaving the team scrambling to figure out how to proceed. Thankfully, she recovered just days before principal photography began, though she had to scale back on stunt work.
Sisterly Bonds and a New Game
The new installment picks up immediately after the events of the first film, with Grace MacCaullay (Weaving) having survived her ordeal with the Le Domas family. However, her victory has triggered a larger, more dangerous game. She’s soon joined by her estranged biological sister, Faith MacCaullay (Kathryn Newton), and together they must navigate a competition between four elite families vying for control of a shadowy institution that secretly runs the world. This expanded conflict is a direct result of Grace’s win, escalating the stakes to a global level.
From Abigail to Ready or Not 2: A Serendipitous Return
Interestingly, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett had initially stepped away from the project, focusing on their vampire thriller, Abigail (2024). However, a call from producer Tripp Vinson sparked a new idea: a story centered around the dynamic between Weaving and Newton as sisters. They quickly penned a script, pitching it to the team, who enthusiastically embraced the concept. This sisterly dynamic became the emotional core of the sequel, deepening Grace’s character and adding a new layer of complexity to the narrative.
Meta Commentary and the Scream Connection
The filmmakers are known for their meta-awareness, a trait honed during their work on the Scream franchise (Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023)). They even subtly included Easter eggs in Abigail referencing Ready or Not. They express a desire for the success of Scream 7, believing that a thriving horror genre benefits everyone. Their experience with the Scream franchise, including a “bake-off” over the director’s cut, taught them the importance of fighting for their artistic vision. They emphasize that a rising tide lifts all boats, and a successful Scream 7 would ultimately benefit Ready or Not 2.
Casting Choices and a Touch of Meta Fun
The casting of Maia Jae as Francesca, a member of the High Council family, sparked speculation about a potential role for Melissa Barrera. While Barrera wasn’t cast, the filmmakers acknowledge their fondness for her and the possibility of working together in the future. They also cast David Cronenberg, a legend in the horror genre, in a role that was only possible due to filming in Toronto. These casting choices add layers of intrigue and a touch of meta-commentary to the film.
Looking Ahead: The Mummy 4
Radio Silence is also gearing up for their next project, The Mummy 4, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. They express excitement about the scale of the film, emphasizing that their approach remains the same regardless of budget: focusing on the characters and their journey. They believe that strong performances and compelling storytelling are the keys to success, whether working on a smaller horror film or a large-scale adventure.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come premieres at South by Southwest on March 13th and hits theaters nationwide on March 20th. The Hollywood Reporter provides ongoing coverage of the film and the broader movie landscape.
