Blood Moon 2024: A Celestial Spectacle Not to Be Missed!
Mark your calendars! Tonight’s full moon will grace the skies with a breathtaking display – a total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a ‘Blood Moon’. This will be the last opportunity to witness such an event until New Year’s Eve 2028-2029, so don’t let it pass you by!
What is a Blood Moon?
A Blood Moon occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon doesn’t disappear entirely. Instead, it takes on a reddish hue, earning it the evocative name ‘Blood Moon’. This captivating color is caused by sunlight being refracted through Earth’s atmosphere.
When and Where to Watch
For skywatchers in the U.S., the eclipse will be visible in the early hours of March 3rd. The peak of totality – when the Moon is deepest within Earth’s shadow – will occur at 6:33 a.m. EST (1133 GMT). However, the spectacle begins earlier, with the partial eclipse phase starting around 4:50 a.m. EST (0950 GMT). The totality phase will last for approximately 58 minutes.
The eclipse will be visible across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and eastern Asia, weather permitting. Over 40% of the world’s population will have a chance to witness at least a portion of this celestial event, according to Time and Date.
Skywatchers in the western half of North America, Australia, and the Pacific region will enjoy the best views. Those in eastern U.S. time zones will be able to catch the Blood Moon just before it sets below the western horizon, but won’t see the entire totality.
Safe Viewing – No Special Equipment Needed!
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye. No filters or special glasses are required! Simply find a clear view of the moon, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
