Wes Moore: Expanding His National Profile
Maryland Governor Wes Moore is strategically planning a series of commencement addresses in pivotal presidential battleground states this May, a move that is quietly amplifying his national presence. As a first-term Democratic governor, Moore is increasingly attracting attention within the party as a potential presidential candidate for 2028, as reported by CBS News.
Return to Roots and Key Swing States
Sources within the Democratic party reveal that Governor Moore is scheduled to deliver a commencement address at Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Pennsylvania – his alma mater. This appearance strategically places him in a crucial swing state and at an institution deeply connected to his personal narrative and early military experience. Moore’s background includes being a Rhodes Scholar, graduating from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Oxford, and serving as an officer in the U.S. Army, including a deployment to Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division.
Engaging with HBCUs and Expanding Reach
Beyond Pennsylvania, Moore is also slated to speak at Johnson C. Smith University, a historically Black college and university (HBCU) in North Carolina, and Frostburg State University in western Maryland. This diverse selection of campuses, spanning two battleground states, is fueling speculation about a potential White House run following the midterms. His appearance at an HBCU is particularly significant, given that Black voters comprise the largest segment of registered Democrats in North Carolina, representing approximately 46% according to research from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Moore’s Response to Presidential Speculation
Ryhan Lake, a spokesperson for Governor Moore, stated, “Governor Moore is honored to be invited to celebrate the Class of 2026—including graduates from Maryland, one of our nation’s historic HBCUs, and his own alma mater.” Lake further emphasized that these commencements will be a “moment to the dedication, service, and promise of the next generation of leaders committed to uplifting communities in our state and across the country.”
Despite the growing national buzz, Moore consistently maintains that his primary focus remains on Maryland. He is currently considered the frontrunner in the upcoming gubernatorial reelection race. During a recent CBS News town hall, Moore directly addressed questions about his political future, stating, “I’m not running for president.” He underscored his commitment to governing Maryland and delivering results on economic growth and public safety.
A Strategic Play for the Future?
When pressed on potentially ruling out a future White House bid, Moore declined to make any long-term commitments, stating he “doesn’t see a reason” to look beyond his current role. He reiterated his love for his job and dedication to serving the people of Maryland. Commencement addresses have historically served as a platform for potential presidential candidates to gauge interest and expand their reach, as seen with Barack Obama in 2006 and George W. Bush in 1999. However, it’s also a path that doesn’t always lead to a campaign, as exemplified by Condoleezza Rice in 2006.
Whether Wes Moore is actively preparing for a 2028 run remains to be seen, but his strategic moves are undoubtedly positioning him as a rising star in the Democratic Party.
