Oba Femi: The Rise of WWE’s Newest Powerhouse
Oba Femi has quickly become a name to watch in the world of professional wrestling. His transition from WWE’s developmental NXT brand to the main roster of Raw and SmackDown has been nothing short of spectacular. The imposing Nigerian heavyweight made an immediate impact, showcasing his power and presence to a global audience.
A Royal Rumble Debut to Remember
Femi’s arrival on the main stage was marked by a dominant performance in January’s Royal Rumble. He eliminated formidable opponents like Bron Breakker, Solo Sikoa, Rey Mysterio, and Matt Cardona, instantly establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with. This wasn’t just a strong showing; it was a statement.
Dominance on Raw and SmackDown
Following the Royal Rumble, Femi continued his winning streak with a series of decisive victories over Kit Wilson, The Miz, and Johnny Gargano. Each win further solidified his reputation as a rising star. His impressive outing against Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December, alongside John Cena’s final in-ring appearance, hinted at the significant role WWE envisions for him.
Vacating the NXT Championship: A Sign of Things to Come
Femi’s decision to vacate the NXT Championship at New Year’s Evil, rather than lose it, underscored his confidence and ambition. It signaled that he was ready for bigger challenges and a brighter spotlight. Now, during WrestleMania season, WWE is clearly investing in building Femi into a major attraction.
The Road to WrestleMania: Facing Rusev
His next significant test comes on the March 9 episode of Raw, where he will battle Rusev, the “Bulgarian Brute.” This match promises to be a clash of titans, testing Femi’s strength and resilience against a seasoned veteran.
Exclusive Interview: Oba Femi Speaks
Here, Oba Femi discusses his rapid ascent and his aspirations for the future, including a highly anticipated match against Brock Lesnar.
What’s the difference between the main roster and NXT?
Oba Femi: “There’s a lot more travel on the main roster, and a much larger audience and platform. I’m grateful for everything I accomplished in NXT. I was able to seamlessly translate my skills to the main roster. The crowd is behind me; they understand my persona and what I bring to the table. ‘The Ruler’ is here to stay.”
Who has helped you adjust to life on the road?
Oba Femi: “I don’t have anyone specific on the road helping me. I always rely on my mentors, like Ivar and Coach [Matt] Bloom. They’ve always been there for guidance.”
How do you handle the pressure of being billed as an “unstoppable monster”?
Oba Femi: “It’s nothing I haven’t experienced before. I embraced that role throughout my entire NXT run, and I’m continuing to do so now. I thrive under pressure. That’s why I’m here. The same qualities that brought me here are the ones I’m showcasing now.”
Comparisons to Brock Lesnar: What are your thoughts?
Oba Femi: “Brock Lesnar has had an incredible career, with two successful runs in WWE and a dominant career in UFC. It would be an honor to face him. The fans have been asking for that match, and I believe it will happen soon. What a way to cap off his legacy by facing ‘The Ruler.’”
