RCMP Investigates Former Calgary Mayor and City Councillor

In a stunning development, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) executed search warrants at the residences of former Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek and current city councillor Andre Chabot. The investigation, first reported by CBC News, is believed to be linked to a potential corruption inquiry.

Details of the Raids

Jyoti Gondek, who served as Calgary’s mayor from 2021 to 2025, confirmed that RCMP officers searched her home and seized her cellphone. “I’ve been fully cooperative and respect the legal process,” Gondek stated. “At the same time, this has been very invasive, and my lawyer and I will be reviewing it closely to ensure it was justified.”

Councillor Andre Chabot of Ward 10 expressed surprise at the search of his home on Thursday. “I have no idea what the investigation is about,” Chabot told reporters. “I do know that I was asked to provide my devices for them to gather evidence. That’s about as much as I know.” He emphasized his full cooperation with the police, stating, “I’m fully cooperating with the police. I’m hoping that somehow it will result in something that they can utilize, but at this point I have no idea what they’re investigating.”

Official Responses and Legal Representation

Current Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas acknowledged awareness of the situation but declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigation and potential legal ramifications. “Because this involves an ongoing investigation with potential legal implications, I have no further comment at this time,” Farkas said.

Defence lawyer Alain Hepner has been retained to represent Councillor Chabot. “He has nothing to hide and he’s being fully cooperative with all the authorities,” Hepner confirmed in an interview. “That’s all I can tell you.”

Police Statement and Timeline

The Calgary Police Service confirmed receiving a complaint in October 2025, which was subsequently referred to the RCMP. In a statement, the police service stated, “To protect the integrity and confidentiality of the ongoing investigative process, no further details will be released at this time.”

The RCMP’s Federal Policing Northwest Region also confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating, “To protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”

The City of Calgary has acknowledged the situation and is “looking into it,” but is currently refraining from further comment.
