Juliana Stratton Senate Race: Controversy and Tight Polls in Illinois
CHICAGO (WLS) — The race to fill retiring Senator Dick Durbin’s seat in Illinois is proving to be fiercely competitive, with a new poll revealing a remarkably close contest between Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton. As the Democratic primary election looms, both candidates are making a final push for votes amidst a developing controversy.
Disputed Endorsement Raises Questions
Over the weekend, Juliana Stratton publicly announced she had received the endorsement of the late Reverend Jesse Jackson. She expressed gratitude, stating she learned of the endorsement during a visit to Operation Rainbow PUSH, with officials informing her of Reverend Jackson’s support before his passing. However, this claim has been challenged.
It has since come to light that the purported endorsement was not an official declaration, but rather part of a draft ballot never intended for public release. Stratton stated she received an endorsement pamphlet, a claim now being retracted by members of the Jackson family. This situation prompted an apology from the Jackson family.
Yusef Jackson, Reverend Jackson’s son, issued a statement clarifying that the document was a draft sample ballot released without authorization. He emphasized that the Jackson Family does not issue political endorsements, nor do Rainbow PUSH or the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
Candidates Make Final Appeals to Voters
On Monday morning, Juliana Stratton greeted supporters outside a polling place, urging them to vote. Meanwhile, Representative Robin Kelly criticized Stratton for not thoroughly verifying the endorsement with the Jackson family before publicizing it. Kelly acknowledged the family’s loss, stating Mrs. Jackson had apologized, but she felt no apology was necessary given their grief.
Krishnamoorthi also made a final appeal to voters, highlighting the importance of turnout despite the cold weather. He expressed confidence in the support of organized labor, particularly the Teamsters, who are actively campaigning on his behalf.
Polls Indicate a Tight Race
A recent poll of likely Democratic primary voters reveals a remarkably tight race. Krishnamoorthi leads with 31.6%, a mere two points ahead of Juliana Stratton’s 29.4%. This margin falls within the poll’s margin of error, suggesting the outcome remains uncertain. Kelly trails significantly with 13.6%.
Juliana Stratton maintains optimism, citing her own internal polls showing her in the lead and emphasizing the momentum of her campaign. Kelly remains hopeful, reporting positive responses from organizations and voters on the ground.
With both candidates intensifying their efforts on Tuesday, every vote is crucial. The question remains whether a clear winner will emerge on election night, or if the outcome will be delayed pending further counting.
