Bernie Sanders Warns of Economic ‘Worst to Come’ as AI Threatens Jobs

Bernie Sanders Sounds Alarm on US Economy and AI Job Displacement

US Senator Bernie Sanders delivered a stark warning about the future of the US economy, asserting that “the worst is yet to come” if working Americans don’t actively challenge the power of billionaires. Speaking at a rally in Manhattan on Sunday alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Sanders highlighted the growing threat of artificial intelligence (AI) to American jobs and the widening gap between the wealthy and the working class.

AI and the Future of Work

Mayor Mamdani cautioned that AI is rapidly “coming for human jobs,” echoing widespread concerns about the potential for automation to displace workers across various industries. This concern fueled the launch of Union Now, a new initiative aimed at bolstering labor unions throughout the United States. The initiative seeks to provide resources and support to workers organizing for better wages, benefits, and job security.

Billionaire Influence and Economic Inequality

Sanders specifically called out billionaires like Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), and Donald Trump, accusing them of prioritizing profit over the well-being of American workers. He pointed to Musk’s investments in robotics and AI to replace human labor, and Bezos’s recent pledge to invest $100 billion in automating manufacturing companies as evidence of this trend. Sanders argued that these actions exacerbate income inequality and threaten the livelihoods of millions.

“When we talk about the importance of taking on the crisis of income inequality, we know that the most effective tool to do so is increasing union density,” stated Mamdani. “Organizing drives and strikes can, frankly, be lonely work. So Union Now is going to support workers and provide them with more resources, and my administration will stand right alongside them.”

A Call for Collective Action

Sanders painted a picture of a ruling class characterized by “extraordinary level of arrogance and cruelty,” comparing their behavior to that of 19th-century monarchs. He cited statistics demonstrating the immense wealth accumulated by the top 1%, noting that Musk’s wealth exceeds that of the bottom 53% of Americans, and that US billionaires saw their net worth increase by $1.5 trillion in 2025 alone.

He passionately argued that the current economic system is unsustainable and that ordinary Americans must unite to demand change. “One of the goals of the oligarchs and the media that they own is to make ordinary people feel that there is nothing that they can do to shape the future,” Sanders declared. “And what we are here today to say to Mr Musk and his friends: go to hell.”

The Power of Unionization and Political Reform

Sanders highlighted Mamdani’s mayoral victory as a testament to the power of collective action, emphasizing that working people can overcome the opposition of wealthy elites. He called for a rebuilding of the US trade union movement and a fundamental overhaul of the political system, including ending the influence of Super Political Action Committees (PACs). He also urged the Democratic Party to become a true champion of the working class.

The rally featured appearances from workers involved in recent unionization efforts at companies like Amazon, Starbucks, REI, Delta Air Lines, and Wells Fargo, showcasing the growing momentum of the labor movement. Sanders concluded with a message of hope, asserting that a better future is possible if Americans stand together and fight for a government that represents all of its citizens.

“If Trump and his fellow oligarchs get their way, we will be living in a society where fewer and fewer people have more and more wealth and more and more power,” Sanders warned. “But the good news is, if we stand together and we not let Trump and his friends divide us up, when we stand together and fight for a government that works for all of us, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish.”
