Toronto Power Outage: Thousands Left in the Dark
A significant power outage plunged several Toronto neighbourhoods into darkness on Saturday evening, impacting over 13,500 customers initially. As of late Saturday night, approximately 3,000 Toronto Hydro customers remain without power. The outage, which began shortly after 8 p.m., is affecting a wide area, and restoration is currently estimated for around 1 a.m. Sunday.
Affected Areas & Subway Disruptions
The outage is impacting multiple neighbourhoods across Toronto, including:
- The Beach & Upper Beach
- Parts of East York and the Danforth
- Oakridge
- Crescent Town
- Birchmount Park
- Scarborough Junction
The affected area stretches roughly from Greenwood Avenue in the west, along Queen Street East and Danforth Road to the south, north of Danforth and St. Clair avenues, and east to past Brimley Road. Residents on Neville Park Boulevard in the Beach neighbourhood are among those experiencing the blackout.
The power disruption has also caused significant disruptions to public transit. Line 2 Bloor-Danforth subway service is suspended between Broadview and Kennedy stations. TTC is operating shuttle buses to accommodate passengers during this time. You can find the latest service updates on the TTC website.
What Caused the Outage?
Toronto Hydro has attributed the outage to a loss of supply from Hydro One. The exact cause of the supply loss is still under investigation, and Toronto Hydro is deferring to Hydro One for further details. Crews are actively working on-site to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
