WMUR Weather Update: Significant Snowfall Expected Across New Hampshire
New Hampshire residents are bracing for a significant winter storm expected to bring several inches of snow across the state, particularly from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for portions of Grafton, Carroll, Sullivan, Merrimack, Strafford, Cheshire, and Hillsborough counties, effective from noon Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.
Winter Weather Advisory in Effect
In addition to the warning, a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for Coos, Grafton, Carroll, Hillsborough, and Rockingham counties. This indicates hazardous travel conditions are likely.
Timeline of the Storm
While Friday morning will see thickening clouds, conditions will remain dry, ensuring a relatively smooth morning commute. However, the situation will rapidly change as snow begins to move into southwestern New Hampshire around noon. By 4 p.m., most of southern and central New Hampshire will be experiencing snowfall.
- Friday Afternoon (4 PM – Midnight): The heaviest snowfall is anticipated during this period, with moderate to heavy bursts. Visibility will be reduced, and roads will become slick.
- Friday Evening: Widespread snowfall is forecast to continue, creating difficult travel conditions.
- Saturday Morning: Light snow may continue intermittently through midmorning, but significant additional accumulation is not expected.
Snowfall Accumulation Forecast
The White Mountains and Upper Valley southward are expected to receive 4 to 8 inches of snow, with some locations potentially seeing even higher totals. Far northern New Hampshire will experience lesser amounts. Accurate, up-to-date forecasts are crucial for planning. You can find detailed, hour-by-hour forecasts on the WMUR Weather website.
Looking Ahead: Sunday’s System
Another storm system is forecast to pass well south of New Hampshire on Sunday. While the Granite State is currently expected to avoid the brunt of this system, the Storm Watch 9 team will continue to closely monitor its track, as even a slight shift could bring changes to the forecast.
