Winter Storm Warning: Maine Braces for Significant Snowfall

Southern Maine is preparing for another weekend of snow, with a winter storm warning in effect for several counties. The National Weather Service forecasts substantial snowfall from Friday night into Saturday, potentially impacting travel and daily life.

What to Expect: Snowfall Totals and Timing

A large swath of the region is expected to receive at least 3 inches of snow, with some areas potentially seeing up to 8 inches. According to meteorologist Justin Arnott from the National Weather Service’s Gray office, two low-pressure systems are to blame for the impending storm. One is over the Great Lakes region, while the other is developing south of New England.

Here’s a breakdown of expected snowfall totals:

  • Southern Oxford County, Northwestern York County, Western Cumberland County: 6 to 8 inches
  • Eastern York County, Most of Cumberland County, Central Oxford County, Androscoggin County: 4 to 6 inches
  • Kennebec County, Waldo County, Southern Franklin County, Northern Oxford County: 2 to 4 inches
  • Somerset County, Northern Franklin County: Around 1 inch
  • Northern Half of the State: Less than 1 inch, if any

Snow is expected to begin falling in Portland around 6 p.m. Friday, with conditions deteriorating rapidly during the evening commute in southern New Hampshire and York County. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated late Friday night, with accumulation rates potentially exceeding 1 inch per hour.

Looking Ahead: Another System on the Horizon

Forecasters are also monitoring another system expected to bring snow to Maine Sunday night into Monday. While this storm appears stronger, it may pass far enough out to sea to have minimal impact, potentially resulting in only light snowfall. However, officials urge residents to stay informed and monitor the forecast closely.
