Tim Curry Reveals His Biggest Career Regret: The Role That Got Away

Tim Curry, the 79-year-old icon celebrated for his chilling portrayals of villains, recently shared his deepest career regret: never having the opportunity to audition for the role of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. While Anthony Hopkins delivered an unforgettable, Academy Award-winning performance, Curry admits the role continues to haunt him decades later.

A Perfect Fit, Blocked Before the Start

In a candid interview with The Academy, Curry revealed he immediately recognized the script’s potential and felt perfectly suited to embody the complex and terrifying Dr. Lecter. He saw in the character everything he craved as an actor specializing in villainous roles. However, his agent inexplicably failed to secure him even an audition. “My agent couldn’t get me in the room, but Tony Hopkins did a great job,” Curry lamented.

A Legacy of Darkness: Curry’s Iconic Villainous Roles

Despite this missed opportunity, Tim Curry has built a legendary career portraying memorably dark characters. He achieved cult status as the flamboyant Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and terrified a generation as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in Stephen King’s It. His chilling performance as Darkness in Ridley Scott’s Legend, and numerous voice roles in beloved animated series, further cemented his reputation as a master of menace.

Other Near Misses and Lingering What-Ifs

Curry’s Academy interview also revealed several other roles he came close to landing. Director Chris Columbus, a fan of Curry’s work (even owning his studio albums!), considered him for the role of Marv in Home Alone, ultimately casting Daniel Stern. Columbus later made amends by offering Curry the role of Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2. He was also a contender for the role of Scar in Disney’s The Lion King, but Jeremy Irons ultimately secured the part.

While each rejection carries its own sting, Curry emphasizes that missing out on Hannibal Lecter remains his greatest regret – a lingering “what if” that continues to resonate.

What Could Have Been: A Different Hannibal?

Curry’s distinctive voice, theatrical presence, and mastery of portraying underlying darkness would have undoubtedly brought a unique flavour to the role of Hannibal Lecter. While Anthony Hopkins delivered a chillingly precise performance, Curry might have explored a different facet of the character’s complexity. His experience with elaborate makeup and costumes in Legend, and his understanding of the psychology of fear demonstrated in It, suggest he was uniquely equipped to tackle the role.

Hopkins’ Journey to Lecter

Interestingly, Anthony Hopkins initially believed the script for The Silence of the Lambs was for a children’s film! After reading just ten pages, he realized its brilliance. Director Jonathan Demme chose Hopkins after Sean Connery famously rejected the role, deeming it “disgusting.” Hopkins’ performance, despite only 16 minutes of screen time, earned him the Best Actor Academy Award – a testament to its impact.

Whether Curry would have achieved the same recognition remains a tantalizing question, one that adds a layer of tragedy to his regret. The lost opportunity serves as a reminder that even the most celebrated actors face unfulfilled ambitions.
