The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is preparing for a significant weather event, with a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada. Heavy rainfall is expected over the next 48 hours, raising concerns about localized flooding. Some areas could receive more than half of their average monthly precipitation within a single 24-hour period. This is a developing situation, and residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
Rainfall Forecast and Flood Risk
Toronto is currently under a special weather statement, anticipating between 20 and 40 millimetres of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. Environment Canada warns that a series of low-pressure systems will bring substantial rainfall across southern Ontario. The primary concern is the potential for flash floods and water pooling on roadways, particularly in low-lying areas. Rainfall warnings may be issued as the event nears, depending on the evolving forecast.
CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter explained that the heavy rain will arrive in waves, beginning around midnight. “The ground is still compacted from the cold season, meaning runoff will be significant, potentially leading to ponding, pooling, and localized flooding throughout the day tomorrow,” Coulter stated. “We could see more than half a month’s worth of rain in some areas in under 24 hours.”
To put this into perspective, Toronto typically receives 70 to 80 millimetres of rainfall at Pearson Airport each month. This upcoming event could deliver a substantial portion of that total in a very short timeframe.
From Rain to Wintery Conditions
The rain is expected to move eastward late Wednesday afternoon, ushering in a significant shift in temperature. “Once the rain clears, cold winds will pick up, and temperatures will plummet back to winter-like values,” Coulter warned. “Prepare for the risk of wintry precipitation towards the end of the work week.” This means the possibility of snow or ice, adding another layer of complexity to the weather situation.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the relatively mild temperatures while they last. Toronto will experience a high of 13°C on Tuesday, with a mix of sun and cloud before showers begin this afternoon.
