Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Joe Pierro
The community of Steubenville has lost a true gem. Joe Pierro, affectionately known as “JoJo,” passed away unexpectedly at the age of 60, leaving behind a void that can only be filled by the cherished memories of his kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit.
Born on June 19, 1966, Joe was more than just a resident of Steubenville; he was a beacon of positivity. Known for his gentle nature and a smile that could brighten any room, Joe had a rare gift for making everyone around him feel seen, heard, and comfortable.
A Passion for Education and Athletics
Joe’s journey was marked by a commitment to helping others grow. A 1985 graduate of Steubenville Catholic Central High School, he pursued his passion for education at West Liberty State College, where he earned a degree in special education. This foundation in teaching reflected his lifelong dedication to supporting those with diverse needs.
Beyond the classroom, Joe’s heart beat for sports. His athletic career was illustrious, playing for Post 33 and later joining the Twines softball league. As a member of the PAC, his love for the game was evident to all who knew him.
Three Decades of Mentorship
Perhaps Joe Pierro’s most enduring impact was his role as a mentor. For nearly thirty years, Joe dedicated his time to coaching young athletes in football and baseball for the Steubenville City Schools. He didn’t just teach the mechanics of the game; he taught life lessons of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
To the countless students he coached, JoJo was more than a coach—he was a guiding light who believed in their potential long before they did.
A Devoted Family Man and Friend
While his professional and community contributions were vast, Joe’s greatest pride was his family. He lived a selfless life, finding his deepest happiness in his two children, Michael and Mia. Whether he was enjoying a family gathering, spending time with lifelong friends, or tending to his yard, Joe embraced the simple joys of life.
He is survived by his mother, Shirley Bryan Pierro; his children, Michael and Mia; his siblings, Anthony (Gina) Pierro and Lynda (Tim) Piergallini; and a wide network of extended family and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
Honoring Joe’s Memory
For those wishing to pay their respects, family and friends will be received at the Mosti Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Triumph of the Cross Parish, with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
