Nigeria Embraces Digital Transformation for Civil Registration

In a significant move toward modernizing governance, the Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched a groundbreaking digital platform designed to streamline the registration of births and deaths. This initiative, spearheaded by the National Population Commission (NPC) and promoted by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), aims to eliminate the tedious paperwork and long queues that have historically plagued civil registration services across the country.

The transition to a self-service digital model is more than just a convenience; it is a critical step in ensuring that Nigerian citizens possess a verifiable legal identity. A valid birth or death certificate is essential for accessing vital services, including healthcare, education, international passports, and financial institutions.

How to Apply for a Birth Certificate Online

The NPC has made it significantly easier for parents and guardians to secure birth documentation. While registration for children under the age of five remains free of charge at all physical NPC registration centres, the online self-service option offers a faster alternative for a fee of N5,000.

Eligibility Requirements for Online Application

To successfully apply for a birth certificate via the portal, the following criteria must be met:

  • The child must have been born within the borders of Nigeria.
  • The child must possess a National Identification Number (NIN).
  • At least one parent must be a Nigerian citizen.
  • One parent must hold a valid birth certificate.

Important Note: Once processed, the certificate can only be downloaded once. If you require an additional copy, you must apply for a reprint through the NPC portal. Please be aware that all payments are non-refundable.

Registering a Death Online: A Seamless Process

In a commitment to public service, the NPC has ensured that death registration remains free of charge through the digital platform. This ensures that families can manage legal affairs without financial burden during difficult times.

Requirements for Death Registration

To begin the process, the applicant (informant) must provide their own National Identification Number (NIN). If the deceased did not have a NIN, the applicant is required to provide a valid reason for its absence.

The application requires specific details to ensure accurate record-keeping, including:

  • Personal details of the deceased.
  • Date, place, and cause of death.
  • Usual place of residence and occupation.
  • Marital status and literacy level.
  • Confirmation of whether the death was certified by a medical doctor.

After submitting the information and selecting the appropriate registration state and local government area, a confirmation email will be sent to the applicant.

Why Digital Identity Matters

The shift toward digital identity is a global trend recognized by organizations like the World Bank as a cornerstone for economic inclusion and social protection. By digitizing these records, Nigeria is not only improving administrative efficiency but also empowering its citizens with the legal tools necessary for a better quality of life.

For those who are not tech-savvy or require additional guidance, the NPC continues to operate registration centres nationwide to provide in-person assistance.
