Academic Excellence: Cape Henlopen High School Students Shine in National Merit Scholarship Program
Achieving academic distinction on a national scale is a milestone that opens countless doors for the future. Recently, Cape Henlopen High School celebrated the remarkable achievements of two of its seniors, who have been recognized for their outstanding intellectual capabilities through the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program.
The program is one of the most competitive academic competitions in the United States, identifying students with exceptional promise based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT).
Understanding the National Merit Scholarship Program
The scale of this competition is immense. In the 2027 cycle, approximately 1.3 million students entered the fray. Out of this massive pool, only about 50,000 students receive any form of recognition, placing these students in the top tier of high schoolers nationwide.

- Semifinalists: More than 16,000 students reached this elite level.
- Commended Students: Approximately 34,000 students were recognized for their outstanding academic potential.
Gavin Carlisle: A Fusion of Arts and Academics
Gavin Carlisle has earned the prestigious title of National Merit Semifinalist. However, Gavin’s brilliance extends far beyond a test score. He is a cornerstone of the Cape Henlopen High School community, seamlessly blending his academic rigor with a passion for the performing arts.
From performing in school plays and musicals to playing in the jazz band, Gavin is a true polymath. His musical talent is particularly noteworthy; he was a first-chair all-state trumpet player for both band and orchestra and is currently a member of the Southern Delaware Orchestra. Additionally, his curiosity leads him to the Science Olympiad, showcasing a versatile intellect.
“Gavin’s National Merit recognition is a tremendous accomplishment, and we are incredibly proud of him,” stated Kristin DeGregory, Principal of Cape Henlopen High School. “He is a wonderful example of a student who embraces opportunities to learn, grow and pursue his passions.”
Looking forward, Gavin aims to attend a large university to study political science or public policy, with an eye toward a future career in law.
Mia Jaoude: Breaking Records in and out of the Pool
Joining the ranks of recognized scholars is Mia Jaoude, who was named a National Merit Commended Student. Mia embodies the spirit of the “student-athlete,” excelling in both the classroom and the competitive swimming arena.
Mia has made history at Cape High, securing the first-ever girls’ individual swim title in the 50m freestyle during the 2025-26 season. Her teamwork is equally impressive, having helped break school records in relay events during the state championships.
Beyond athletics, Mia is deeply committed to the Animal Science Pathway. Her academic ambitions are clear: she plans to pursue a degree in biochemistry in college with the ultimate goal of becoming a veterinary surgeon. When she isn’t studying or swimming, Mia finds balance through creative outlets like crafting, drawing, and reading.
A Legacy of Dedication
The achievements of Gavin and Mia are a testament to the culture of hard work, curiosity, and dedication fostered at Cape Henlopen High School. By balancing demanding extracurriculars with elite academic performance, these students serve as inspirations for their peers and a source of pride for the entire community.
Congratulations to Gavin Carlisle and Mia Jaoude on their well-deserved recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program!
