Veterans Affairs Clinic Shooting: Remembering Social Worker Nicholas Crews
JASPER, Ga. – The community is mourning the loss of Nicholas “Nic” Crews, a 34-year-old social worker who dedicated his life to serving veterans. Crews was tragically killed on Tuesday afternoon inside a Veterans Affairs (VA) clinic in Jasper, Georgia, while on call providing mental health support.
A Life Dedicated to Service
For Nic Crews, helping others wasn’t merely a profession; it was a deeply held calling. Described by family as a loving son, brother, husband, and father, he was expecting his third child with his wife, Alyssa. He initially considered a path in ministry before pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work, driven by a desire to support veterans facing mental health challenges and navigating the complexities of accessing care. “That’s what he felt called to do,” a family member shared. “He absolutely loved it.”
Crews focused on providing immediate support to veterans, often assisting with walk-in appointments. He was at the Jasper clinic specifically to address the needs of those seeking urgent mental health assistance. His dedication exemplified his commitment to bridging the gap for veterans who struggled to secure appointments or needed immediate support.
The Incident at the VA Clinic
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) identified the suspect as Lawrence Charles Michels, 51, of Jasper. Michels had arrived at the clinic for a walk-in mental health consultation. The GBI is currently investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting. According to reports, after the shooting, Michels encountered law enforcement officers and an armed civilian outside the clinic. Shots were exchanged, and Michels died at the scene. The GBI is leading the ongoing investigation.
A Compassionate and Caring Individual
Before joining the Department of Veterans Affairs, Crews worked at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as a patient sitter. A former colleague described him as “genuinely loving” and a “safe and calming presence.” She recalled feeling “seen and cared for” by him, highlighting his innate ability to connect with and support others. This compassion fueled his pursuit of a career in social work, a path those who knew him say felt inevitable.
“I remember when he told me he was going to get his master’s in social work and thinking, of course Nic would want to do that,” the former colleague wrote. “He truly cared to his core, and gave his life in service to others.”
A Loving Family Man
Crews was deeply rooted in his faith, which permeated all aspects of his life. However, his greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his wife, Alyssa, who is 38 weeks pregnant, and their two young children. “This family was his world,” a family member said. He had recently celebrated his 34th birthday, just days before the tragic event.
Those who knew him remember Crews as the “life of the party,” someone who was “always hilarious” and full of energy, yet also incredibly dependable. He was a supportive brother and a vibrant presence in the lives of those around him.
Ongoing Investigation
The GBI investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting and understand the motives behind the tragic incident. The loss of Nicholas Crews serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those working in mental health and the importance of supporting our veterans.
