TVA’s Shift: A Retiree’s Disappointment and Concerns for the Future

For over 25 years, I proudly served the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as a resource planning engineer, dedicated to ensuring reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electricity for the people of the Valley. However, following the recent board meeting, I find myself, for the first time in my life, deeply disheartened – even embarrassed – to acknowledge my affiliation with the TVA, even in retirement.

This shift in direction stems from four key decisions approved by a board comprised entirely of appointees from the Trump administration. These decisions raise serious questions about the future of the TVA and its commitment to the communities it serves.

The Four Concerning Decisions

  • Elimination of DEI Initiatives: The TVA will remove all references to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from its personnel documents, activities, and strategic goals. This move signals a step backward in fostering a welcoming and inclusive workplace.
  • Renewable Energy De-Prioritization: The preference for renewable energy sources in the acquisition of new resources will be eliminated. This decision hinders the TVA’s progress towards a cleaner energy future.
  • Carbon Metrics Removal: All carbon metrics will be removed from the TVA’s asset assessment mechanisms. This effectively removes accountability for carbon emissions and undermines efforts to combat climate change.
  • Continued Reliance on Fossil Fuels: The TVA will continue operating over 3,800 MW of some of the most carbon-intensive generation in the United States, a legacy of the “energy dominance” theme championed by President Trump, allowing for the continued burning of coal.

Furthermore, the TVA’s overview of future resource acquisition continues to prioritize natural gas, small nuclear, and pumped hydro, while conspicuously omitting any mention of further investment in other renewable resources. This lack of commitment to renewables is particularly troubling.

One might suggest that the TVA reconsider its mission statement, perhaps removing words like “CLEAN” and “INNOVATIVE” if they no longer accurately reflect its priorities.

The TVA has a responsibility to its customers and the environment to embrace a sustainable energy future. These recent decisions represent a significant departure from that responsibility.
