Canada Post to Phase Out Home Mail Delivery
Canada Post is set to significantly alter its mail delivery services in the coming years, confirming plans to end home delivery for approximately four million addresses. This move, announced on Tuesday, aims to modernize the postal service and address mounting financial challenges.
Financial Strain and the Need for Change
According to Minister of Public Services and Procurement of Canada, Joël Lightbound, the current situation is unsustainable. “Canada Post is practically insolvent, and repeated bailouts are not a long-term solution,” he stated to Global News. The company has faced cumulative deficits of $5 billion since 2018, and has not been profitable since 2015.
The Modernization Plan: Community Mailboxes and Extended Delivery Times
The modernization plan involves transitioning the four million affected addresses to community mailboxes. This change will be implemented gradually over the next nine years, with the majority of the conversions occurring within the next three to four years. Alongside this shift, Canada Post will also be extending delivery timelines to seven days, a move expected to generate annual savings of approximately $420 million.
Responding to Changing Canadian Needs
Canada Post asserts that these “major transformations” are necessary to adapt to the evolving needs of Canadians and avoid becoming a permanent burden on taxpayers. The company aims to remain a viable service without relying on continuous government funding.
A Gradual Transition
The changes will not be implemented all at once. Canada Post will roll out the plan progressively, allowing for a smoother transition for both the company and its customers. This phased approach is designed to minimize disruption while achieving the necessary financial improvements.
