Air France Flight to Dubai Makes Emergency U-Turn Amidst Iran Tensions
A special Air France flight, intended to repatriate French citizens from the United Arab Emirates, was forced to turn back on Thursday, March 5th, 2026, due to escalating tensions surrounding the conflict in Iran. The aircraft, en route from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Dubai via Cairo, was scheduled to collect French nationals as part of an operation coordinated with the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Air France confirmed that “due to the evolving security context at the destination, flight AF4190 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Dubai on March 5th, via Cairo, made a U-turn.” The airline emphasized that the plane was not carrying passengers, as it was travelling to Dubai specifically to evacuate French citizens.
Missile Fire Prompts Diversion
French Transport Minister, Philippe Tabarot, explained on X (formerly Twitter) that the decision followed reports of missile fire in the area. “This flight, intended to pick up our compatriots in the United Arab Emirates, was forced to turn back this Thursday evening due to missile fire in the zone,” he stated, adding that “this situation demonstrates the instability in the region and the complexity of repatriation operations.”
The Minister further reiterated that the safety of those concerned remains the top priority. “We are fully aware of the legitimate expectations of our compatriots on site, but their return can only be carried out under guaranteed safety conditions,” he declared.
Repatriation Efforts Continue
Air France clarified that passenger lists are managed by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and indicated that its teams remain mobilized “alongside @francediplo.” The airline has also suspended its regular flights to the region.
Despite the challenges, efforts to repatriate French citizens who wish to leave the Middle East are ongoing. The situation highlights the precarious security landscape and the difficulties involved in conducting evacuation operations in volatile regions.
