Colon Cancer Diagnosis: ‘Married at First Sight’ Coach Mel Schilling Shares Heartbreaking Update
Mel Schilling, the beloved dating coach from Married at First Sight (MAFS), has bravely shared a devastating update regarding her health. The 54-year-old revealed that her colon cancer has spread to her brain, and medical professionals have exhausted available treatment options.
Schilling first received a diagnosis of colon cancer in December 2023. In a poignant Instagram post on Thursday, she disclosed that the cancer had subsequently metastasized to her lungs and now the left side of her brain. “Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do,” she wrote, adding with heartbreaking honesty, “My light is starting to fade – and quickly.”
A Courageous Fight While Filming
Despite her challenging diagnosis, Schilling continued to fulfill her role on MAFS, undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy while filming. She had also been offered a promising opportunity to participate in a groundbreaking clinical trial tailored to her specific gene type, scheduled to begin this month. However, her condition took a turn for the worse last Christmas, when she began experiencing debilitating “blinding headaches and numbness down my right side.”
“Simple tasks have become incredibly difficult,” Schilling shared, acknowledging the uncertainty of her future. “I honestly don’t know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath.”
Urging Early Detection and Celebrating Family
Schilling’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of proactive health checks. She passionately urged individuals to seek medical attention if “something doesn’t feel right.” The CDC provides comprehensive information on colorectal cancer symptoms and screening guidelines.
In her post, Schilling also expressed deep gratitude for her family, sharing a touching photo with her husband and daughter. She initially joined the Australian version of MAFS and later expanded her role to the UK edition, airing on E4. Last month, she announced her departure from the Australian show to prioritize her health and family.
Support from Channel 4 and the MAFS Family
Channel 4 released a statement expressing their profound support for Schilling, describing her as a “hugely valued and much-loved part of the Channel 4 family.” They highlighted her “wisdom, warmth, humour and kindness,” emphasizing the deep respect and affection she has earned from colleagues and viewers alike.
John Aiken, a fellow MAFS expert, will step in to replace Schilling for the remainder of the current UK series. CPL, the production company behind the UK version of the show, echoed the sentiment of love and respect for Schilling, offering their thoughts and support to her and her family during this incredibly difficult time.
The Importance of Awareness
Schilling’s openness about her battle with colon cancer is a testament to her strength and courage. Her story underscores the critical need for increased awareness of the disease, early detection, and ongoing research into effective treatments.
