De Minaur Digs Deep, Humbert Dominates at ABN AMRO Open; Felix Auger-Aliassime Watch Continues
Rotterdam witnessed a captivating day of tennis at the ABN AMRO Open, with Alex de Minaur showcasing his resilience and Ugo Humbert demonstrating his dominance. While Felix Auger-Aliassime wasn’t in action today, the performances of his fellow competitors set the stage for an exciting weekend.
De Minaur Survives Van de Zandschulp Test
Top-seeded Alex de Minaur endured a grueling quarter-final match against home favorite Botic van de Zandschulp, ultimately prevailing 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5. This victory secures De Minaur’s spot in the semi-finals for the third consecutive year at the ABN AMRO Open. The Australian faced a stern test, dropping the first set and battling back from a 2-0 deficit in the deciding set.
“I’m happy I got through,” De Minaur stated after the two-hour, 44-minute encounter. “It wasn’t looking too good about three quarters of the way through the match, but I managed to find some of my better tennis today at the end of the second set. Another great mental effort.”
Despite being outplayed at times by Van de Zandschulp’s powerful groundstrokes, De Minaur’s unwavering determination and ability to save crucial break points – five of seven, according to Infosys ATP Stats – proved decisive. He now boasts a 4-0 head-to-head record against the Dutch player and joins Tom Okker as only the second player in tournament history to reach three consecutive semi-finals (Okker achieved this feat from 1974-76).
Humbert Cruises Past O’Connell
Ugo Humbert continued his impressive form, accelerating past Christopher O’Connell 6-4, 6-1 to secure his 10th consecutive ATP Tour quarter-final win. The Frenchman’s match was a stark contrast to De Minaur’s, with Humbert taking control early and dominating the second set.
The decisive break came in the 10th game of the first set, allowing Humbert to close it out. The World No. 36, a four-time tour-level champion on indoor hard courts, completed the victory in just 77 minutes. Humbert’s consistent performance is drawing attention as a potential contender for the title.
Looking Ahead: De Minaur vs. Humbert
De Minaur and Humbert will now face off in the semi-finals on Saturday. This promises to be a compelling clash between the Australian’s defensive prowess and the Frenchman’s aggressive style. Fans will also be keenly watching the progress of other top players, including Felix Auger-Aliassime, as the tournament progresses. Stay tuned for further updates and analysis from the ABN AMRO Open.
