From Skid Row to Stardom: Donna D’Errico’s Inspiring Journey

Actress Donna D’Errico is making a powerful impact in her community, volunteering with HOPE UNITED Los Angeles Mission & Hope the Mission. Her dedication stems from a deeply personal connection – she once experienced homelessness herself.

During a recent interview, D’Errico, 58, shared the profound “shame and embarrassment” she felt during her time on the streets. Now, she’s giving back, serving chef-prepared meals and providing care and dignity to those currently facing similar struggles on Skid Row. This Easter outreach, in partnership with Albertsons, offered a vital lifeline to individuals experiencing homelessness.

A Past She Doesn’t Forget

“The biggest surprise from my career journey? I think is, I guess, the fact that I went from something similar to what these guys are experiencing here with homelessness, to being on one of the biggest shows in the world, actually two of them,” D’Errico reflected. “And going from there and ending up very fortunate in life. But I do understand their plight because I experienced it myself at one time.”

D’Errico recalls the practical difficulties of homelessness, like finding a place to simply wash clothes. She emphasizes that this experience, though long ago, remains vivid in her memory.

Why Volunteering Matters

D’Errico has been a consistent volunteer at the LA Mission for a significant period, driven by the high rates of homelessness, particularly among single women and children. She recognizes her own good fortune and believes in the power of giving back.

“There’s a lot of people that, like the saying goes, ‘There but for the grace of God go I,'” she explained. “I could be in that situation too, and it just feels good to spend my time on a nice day like this giving back.”

She stresses that while financial donations are helpful, the gift of time is especially valuable. “It is easy to give money and to donate, but giving your time is so precious because we all are busy.”

From Playboy to Baywatch and Back to Service

D’Errico’s rise to fame began in 1995 when she was named Playboy‘s Playmate of the Year, followed by her role on the iconic television series Baywatch. Interestingly, she recently approached Playboy about a potential feature for the magazine’s 30th anniversary of her debut cover, but was surprised to learn they no longer featured pictorials of that nature. You can read more about this here.

Despite her success, D’Errico remains grounded and committed to helping others. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and the importance of compassion and support.
