Brendan Fraser’s Epic Return: ‘The Mummy 4’ and the ‘Brenaissance’

Brendan Fraser is gearing up for a monumental comeback in The Mummy 4, slated for a wide theatrical release on May 19, 2028. This highly anticipated sequel arrives nearly two decades after Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the last installment in The Mummy trilogy. The film promises to reunite fans with the beloved characters, featuring Fraser reprising his iconic role as adventurer Rick O’Connell, alongside Rachel Weisz as the brilliant Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell, and John Hannah as Evelyn’s endearing brother, Jonathan Carnahan. The goal? To recapture the playful dynamic that made the original films so captivating.

Preparing for Adventure

With a significant gap since the last film, Fraser is taking his preparation for The Mummy 4 very seriously. Recently, he was spotted embarking on a unique form of research – experiencing Revenge of The Mummy: The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood with the film’s directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known collectively as Radio Silence). This duo is celebrated for their successful revitalization of the Scream franchise, and their involvement signals a promising direction for The Mummy 4.

Universal Pictures shared a viral image of Fraser on the ride, captioning it: “Getting back into character! Brendan Fraser had a blast braving Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride at Universal Studios in preparation for reprising the role of Rick O’Connell.”

Fraser’s character is sure to encounter a host of perilous crypts, ancient curses, and creepy creatures. But before production begins this summer, the team took a thrilling plunge into darkness on the high-speed indoor rollercoaster, a fitting warm-up for the challenges ahead. The ride experience, documented on April 8, 2026, occurred just months before principal photography is scheduled to commence in August.

A Story Rooted in Nostalgia

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are directing The Mummy 4 from a script penned by David Coggeshall, described as “beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun.” While plot details remain closely guarded, the film is expected to disregard the events of the third movie, serving as a direct continuation of the first two installments. However, a time jump is anticipated, allowing audiences to catch up with Rick and Evelyn later in their lives.

The ‘Brenaissance’ and a Triumphant Return

The Mummy 4 marks a significant return to the action-adventure genre for Fraser, the genre that initially propelled him to global stardom. After facing years of personal and professional hardships, Fraser experienced a remarkable career resurgence, affectionately dubbed the “Brenaissance.” This culminated in a well-deserved Best Actor Oscar win in 2023 for his powerful performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. This award solidified his status as a leading man once again, paving the way for his return to large-scale productions like The Mummy 4.

It’s important to note that this Mummy project is entirely separate from Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2017). Fraser’s return promises a nostalgic and thrilling experience for fans of the original franchise.
