Pokémon Card Robbery: $100,000 in Merchandise Stolen in Manhattan Heist

A shocking armed robbery has shaken the Pokémon trading card community in Manhattan. On Wednesday night, Poké Court, a popular Pokémon card shop located in the Meatpacking District, was targeted by three masked individuals who made off with over $100,000 worth of merchandise.

Details of the Robbery

According to NYPD officials, officers responded to a 911 call reporting the robbery at 412 W. 13th St. The suspects, described as three males wearing masks and carrying anime-themed backpacks, entered the store while it was hosting its first-ever community event, attended by over 40 customers. They brandished a firearm and hammers, holding everyone inside hostage during the three-minute ordeal.

An employee of Poké Court revealed the extent of the loss, estimating the stolen goods to be valued at over $100,000. The store specializes in Pokémon cards, card accessories, and Pokémon-inspired lifestyle products, as well as artwork from curated artists.

Store Owner’s Response

Owner Courtney Chin expressed her devastation, stating she maintains a detailed inventory and hopes for full insurance coverage. She is also investigating the effectiveness of the store’s alarm system and is considering hiring armed security. “That’s been the recommendation of the police and of other shops in the area to get an armed guard or like a doorman,” Chin stated.

However, Chin emphasized that the financial loss is secondary to the trauma experienced by her customers. “It’s not even about the money – she wanted to create a safe place to enjoy a hobby and not have 40 customers held at gunpoint,” she explained.

A Growing Trend?

This incident isn’t isolated. Similar robberies targeting Pokémon card collections have been reported in other major cities across the US in the past week, including Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle. This suggests a concerning trend of targeting the increasingly valuable Pokémon card market. The rising value of rare Pokémon cards has unfortunately made them a target for criminals.

The Pokémon Company International has not yet released an official statement regarding these robberies, but the incidents highlight the need for increased security measures at Pokémon card retailers and events.
