TORONTO, ON – April 13, 2026 – Ontario workers injured on the job are poised to receive a significant boost in financial support, thanks to upcoming legislation proposed by Labour Minister David Piccini. This marks the first increase in Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) income replacement benefits in almost three decades, a move welcomed by labour advocates across the province.
Significant Increase to Loss-of-Earnings Benefits
Currently, the WSIB provides loss-of-earnings benefits covering 85% of a worker’s net pay. The proposed changes will raise this to 90%, providing a more substantial financial safety net for those unable to work due to workplace injuries. This increase is expected to alleviate financial strain on injured workers and their families during recovery.
“For too long, Ontario workers have faced financial hardship while recovering from workplace injuries,” stated Minister Piccini. “These changes demonstrate our government’s commitment to protecting workers and ensuring they receive the support they deserve.”
Extending Support Beyond 65
The proposed legislation also addresses a long-standing concern regarding workers who choose to continue working past the age of 65. Currently, WSIB benefits are automatically terminated at retirement age. The new changes will allow workers to continue receiving support if they remain employed, recognizing the increasing trend of Canadians working longer.
Expanded Coverage for Healthcare Workers
In a related announcement, the province has indicated its intention to extend WSIB coverage to healthcare and support workers in privately-run retirement homes and group homes. This expansion aims to provide crucial protection to a workforce often facing demanding and potentially hazardous conditions. This move acknowledges the vital role these workers play in caring for vulnerable populations and ensures they have the same workplace safety protections as their publicly-employed counterparts. You can find more information about workplace safety regulations at the Ontario Ministry of Labour website.
The full package of labour law changes is expected to be announced in the coming days. These changes represent a significant step forward in protecting Ontario workers and ensuring a safer, more supportive workplace for all.
